Faster and better handling of video files

Post by Dacar92 »

I have a budget and would like to purchase more memory or a better video card. If I want to speed up rendering and basic handling of large vid files (2-3 Gb) am I better off buying more memory or a newer video card. I currently have the following:

512 Mb memory
ATI Radeon 9200 vid card

The rest of the specs:
Sony computer, P4-3.0 Ghz, 160 Gb HD, 80 Gb HD

I can afford two sticks of 512 Mb (each) memory or one ATI 9800 level vid card.

Thanks in advance.

The video card doesn't help with rendering -- get another 512MB of RAM.

I have the following configuration:

P4 2.8
1GB Ram
2 x 120 GB SATA HD
ATI Radeon 9200 VIVO video card

I noticed during rendering that the processor will run at 95% to 100% yet the memory usage would be +- 440MB. I initially had 512 MB and upped it to 1 GB to improve performance but it did not have the desired effect. The memory usage remained at +- 440MB and the rendering speed was unchanged. Is there perhaps something wrong with my PC setup?

Athlon 2500 xp
1Gb ram.

I increased the ram from 512 last year.

I did not notice much difference in the rendering process times.

But the reaction of Video Studio was very noticeable.

When inserting clips to the library, that pregnant pause.
Deleting clips from the library.
Inserting clips after capture.
Playback, pauses before playing.

Everything seems to work much faster and smoother.

Rendering speed is mostly a CPU speed issue, with minor influences by memory (more = less use of virtual memory on the HDD) and memory bus speed (faster is better).

You can speed up all phases of video editing, especially large file handling, by adding a 10Krpm WD Raptor hard drive. If you install the operating system on it, boot and restart times are also much shorter.
