Thanks for that link Accolades. I wasn't aware that Corel had uploaded some tutorials to YouTube. Curious as to why they only include the Vimeo link in the User Guide....

I tried DVD Factory Pro 2010 out today and find it be very different to what I'm used to-and confusing to use.

Disappointed

Post by Hdvido »

The X3 version of VS is a sad disappointment. It almost feels like a step backward, especially with the burning module. In addition, I'm finding some Blue effects going flaky.

We know, we know! No need to repeat the obvious. Corel is working on a fix.

Other issues to resolve.

In addition to various authoring issues I find X3 producing visually poorer quality AVCHD (low bit rates, etc) images and the i7 processor is hardly being utilized. I own two other video editors that utilize the i7 at least 4 times as heavily with much faster results !

I tried to search several different ways, but alas, I am bugging you again.
I think X3 has started to work for me, for some unknown reason AND I actually got thru editing to the point of file creation and then went to create disc - DVD factory 2010 opened - was chugging along fine until it came time to burn the disc and I couldn't find a way to change the drives - My BluRay burner is secondary to the DVD burner and the program was looking for a disc in the DVD burner, when I wanted to output to the Blu Ray burner - Is there any way to change the output drive or does this thing just default to the first available optical drive? I could go and change the SATA cables and that would do it, but I would want to switch between drives rather than us the BD for everything. thanks JackTB

Found the setup tab "hidden" at the right - sorry

Re: Authoring - VSX3

I have VSX2 and VSX3 running on a Dell E6400 running Windows 7 64-bit. I purchased VSX2 18 months ago because it was the only authoring software that I found would run on the laptop I had at that time which was a Lenovo T61.

I have a simple work flow. I take up to an hour of scenes of elementary mathematics classrooms using a Canon HF100 set at the highest resolution which is 1920x1080 with a variable bit rate that averages around 16,000. I dump these scenes into VSX2, add chapters, and burn to AVCHD after checking the box that says something like "do not convert conforming mpg." The burn usually takes about 15 minutes longer than the actual run time because of the smart rendering implemented by this check box.

I tried the same work flow in VSX3 and found that in DVD Factory 2010 there is no "do not convert conforming mpg" check box but instead some settings. I tried a custom setting with a bit rate of 16,000. It took 5.5 hours to create the disc. I went back and did it again but set the custom bit rate to 18,000. This time it only took 50 minutes to create the disc. The first disc played flawlessly on any player I tried. When playing the second disc, the video stops and starts when played with WinDVD but when played with Windows Media Player it just stops. Splash Lite 1.3 comes closest to playing the second disc without error. I went back to VSX3 and converted my scenes into a single video file with and without smart rendering. With smart rendering, I again got a bad result.

I have seen all the issues previously raised about VSX3 in this forum. Let me add to that that the smart rendering feature found in VSX2 is now totally broken.

Did you download MovieFactory 7 as the replacement authoring tool for X3? You will find it almost a carbon copy of the burning module in X2.

You also don't say what format you were burning in... Can you confirm that it was Blu-Ray? Or was it down-converting to a standard definition DVD?

As for SmartRender being "broken", I am not sure that is necessarily an accurate description. While I acknowledge this may be only my own personal opinion, I have from virtually the start of the advent of high definition video editing in VS been advising people NOT to use SmartRender. I know it was never written in the first place for high definition, since it has been in successive versions of VS going back years. The problem is that it also does not appear to have ever been updated for high definition. So in that sense, it is not "broken" as it still works well with standard definition. It's just that, IMHO, it should not be used with high definition...

I searched for mpeg4 before posting this.

I am new to VSX3, but have been able to use MF Pro 2010 to create some DVDs. Seeing that DMF7SE might be better, I fetched it through DO MORE and installed it.

Having read that it doesn't work with VSX3 project files, I exported a 2.2GB mpeg4 file from VSX3 and brought it into DMF7SE. This is a 26 minute video.

However, I ran into the problem of the imported video only being about 1/2 the length and size of the original mpeg4 video (which plays full length in Windows Media Player). This is a bad thing!

I searched the forum and found where this had been a problem with VSX2 and Vista.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium and there are no service packs yet for Win 7 that I can find.

Can anyone help me resolve this??

Thanks!! John
