Go to File > Workspace > Load and load either a customized workspace that you have previously saved, or the default PSP X workspace.
If that doesn't work, go to File > Preferences > Reset Preferences, select all six options and click OK.

Thanks Tim, you are a star! ,was beginning to think that this would never happen to any one else and there was no answer except to reinstall. The former worked but I went through the pref as well. The only thing not showing now is the word Layers that was in a small blue vertical strip on the extreme right of the workspace,is this a problem.

If "Layers" was showing like that then you had the Layers palette set to roll up to a tab. You can put it back like that by moving the Layers palette to dock with the Materials palette, then click the small pin icon on the palette's header. When your mouse is over the pin icon you should see the words "Auto hide palette". The palette will then expand when you roll the mouse over the tab, and auto hide when you move the mouse away.
After you've finished putting everything where you want it, go to File > Workspace > Save. You can then load your saved workspace to get everything back in place if needed in the future.
