Menu management

Post by Davidk »

Hi,

Using VS 11.5 pro, I have some follow on queries re menus.

Q1. Assume say 5 clips as the basis of the menu. Most menu attempts I've made enable a viewer to select the starting item (say 2 of 5), but once started the disc plays to the end , that is instead of playing item 2 and then going back to the menu, it plays on to item 3 and then on to item 4 etc, only going back to the menu at the end of all items.

My previous queries re menus were related to disabling auto repeat, and certainly when that checkbox is unticked and a menu exists, the play function returns to the menu AT the end of all the video ie after the last item. It doesn't - not that I have been able to discover - deal with returning to the menu after the selected menu item has completed.

Is there a way to make the final product play just the menu item chosen and then go back to the menu? eg, if item 2 is selected, when item 2 finishes, the player returns to the menu for the next selection. It only plays the whole selection one after the other when play all is selected.

Possibly in version 11.5 pro this functionality doesn't exist. If not, is there a specific later version in which it does??

Q2. Assume further that the total of the 5 clips is too big for one disc, requiring say 3 clips on disc 1 and 2 clips on disc 2.
How does one configure the menu for items that are not in the video clips for the relevant disc? For example, if clips 4 and 5 are on disc 2, how to configure the menu for disc 1 that it has the 3 clips plus markers for 2 more that can have their titles and a further message that they are on disc 2. If there is a way, the menu on disc 1 might look like:
* item 1 * item 2

* item 3 * item 4 - load disc 2

* item 5 - load disc 2

and similarly for items 1 thru 3 (load disc 1 message) on disc 2

Thanks muchly.

Answer to Q2: create a short video file with words that say Insert Disc 2... would only need to be 20 seconds long at max. Could even create a still graphic with those words and create a video file from that.

Another way would be to add a line of text on the menu screen that says Disc 1 of 2

And what are these "clips", chapters or titles?

Chapters are points within a particular title, or video file. Chapter locations can be represented on a menu to go directly to them, but they will always continue to play. They will not go back to the menu after playing just that chapter.

Titles are individual video files, or projects. As stated, titles can contain chapter points. Titles can also be represented on a menu. Settings available in VS will enable you to continue to play or go back to the menu after a title has finished playing.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

The chapters are basically separate small video clips all related to the same subject - eg, tours on holiday. Separate chapter points within one clip seems - at this stage anyway - to be an over complication.

Sometimes (not often) the whole movie may be made up of several small project files assembled into one, but mostly its one video clip after another. Hence the interest in managing access to these smaller activities from the menu.

So as you indicate the settings enable me to go back to the menu after a title has played, which settings are they??? because as I indicated, experimentation did not get me that result.

Any suggestions for the second query on the list (title points in a menu for clips not on the disc)?
