Is this media player the best one for HD movies?

Post by ecbritz »

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to recommend non-Corel products on this site, even open-source, free, "community developed" programs. But the open-source media player, "Media Player Classic Home Cinema" -- the latest upgrade of August 2009 -- is really the best player I have been able to find for playing high definition movies on a computer. Also movies created using VS X2 are played brilliantly. I first tried different top-rated, "professional" level commercial media players, costing around $100. But they were more difficult to operate than Media Player Classic Home Cinema, they seemed to balk at playing certain formats, and the image quality was simply not as good as that of the open-source product. Media Play Classic played everything I tried to play beautifully and without any problems. So I've discarded the commercial contenders. If I'm overestimating this free program because I'm a novice in the camcorder field, please direct me to a program which will impress me more.

Had a quick look at this and seems like an excellent "Free" player. There are a couple of free players in the "Free Stuff" section of this board and perhaps Admin will consider putting this one into the list. It certainly does a good job on my HD videos.

May I point out that Media Player Classic Home Cinema is not a ¡§rogue freebie¡¨ like many free programs which download malware on your computer. MPC is downloaded at the trusted sourceforge.net site, dedicated to the development of open source projects. This player has been around since the nineties and is like Linux, OpenOffice or Paint.net, a product of quality made by some good guys. I'm writing this not so much to glorify this excellent player but to warn against downloading free programs in general. Many are Trojan horses, as you will discover sooner or later.
