Live One Care Alternative?

Post by Black Lab »

I am a user of Window's Live One Care, an all in one anti-virus, firewall, backup, and utility program. The thing I like most about it is the "One Care Circle" where one pc acts like a hub, or server, and controls and monitors other pcs in the circle, even remotely. For instance, my Mom's pc is in my circle and if her pc has a problem I am notified and can (usually) fix the problem remotely.

I just bought a new laptop with Windows 7 and found out it does not support Live One Care. I then found out that Live One Care itself is being phased out, with no comparable replacement being offered by Microsoft.

My question is, is there an alternative to Live One Care? I am especially interested in the remote feature.

not sure on this, as I've had nothing to do with it from an MVP side adn don't use it from a customer side, but I seem to recal a product called Morro, but not sure if this evolved into windows security essentials.
Do either (or just it) fit the bill?

My Windows 7 is on a hard drive tucked away in a drawer somewhere - still prefer XP. Does Windows 7 have "Remote Assistance"
Image

Only last week I took my netbook to work on a night shift so I could test out it during the "early hours" when things had gone quiet. I plugged in an internet dongle and was able to log onto my desktop computer at home 5 miles away. I checked my email, sent some email and even downloaded and then upgraded my copy of virtual box - all via remote access.

If you're looking for a free, all-in-one package like that, none that I'm aware of. Products aimed at the corporate (or SOHO) customer will offer the notification and remote feature, but those are not free, nor cheap.

I'm not familiar with MSE's features, I haven't checked it out.

Perhaps someone over at the Security forum at dslreports.com could answer that question.

Steve, I actually use LogMeIn to connect remotely to my Mom's pc, as well as others. What is nice about the Live One Care is that it will notify me if a problem pops up.

It's a shame that a nce product like this just doesn't make it, for whatever reason. I guess we as Corel users know all too well about that, huh?

Jeff,
At work right now and as usual the "LogMeIn" web site is not accessible from here! I took a look at Wikipedia and can see that it is similar to the built in remote desktop that comes with XP but I think the Microsoft version will only access another computer with the same or an earlier version. e.g. Vista can access an XP computer but not the other way round.

I came across this whilst browsing through Wikipedia and you might find something suitable here.
