Paint Shop Pro Photo X3 Released

Post by Tim Morrison »

PSPP X3 has been released, although as I write this the trial download is not available yet.

You can see the web page at
http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... bview=tab0.

Several things look very interesting...

The Organizer has had a fair bit of work, and in a video of its features (http://www.corel.com/content/flash/pspx ... nizer.html) you can see that the list of folders on the left-hand side has a "My Computer" item. Hopefully this means that there is simple browsing now available... we can only hope.

Raw Pre-processing. "Make RAW adjustments during the loading process and work with even more RAW camera formats-faster than ever before".

Text editing directly on the image... a feature that's been requested for years.

PSP now supports multithreading and multiple core processors.

It has an Object Extractor that looks like it might be the same as the ImageSkill plugin that was included with X2 Ultimate.

And also something called Smart Carver -
"New! Smart Carver.
Seamlessly remove objects from an image with professional quality. The Smart Carver also lets you expand or contract objects without distortion".

Nice...hope this is a significant improvement without removing a lot. Must be what the webinar will discuss tomorrow and Wednesday.

I think that is what the webinars are about. That and Video Studio, which has also been upgraded to X3.

It doesn't seem to support the UFO (Ulead File Objects) format.
Interesting omission when the feedback on various forums tends to suggest the end is nigh for PhotoImpact with PSP acting as its successor.

I've also noticed that with VS X3, they have included numerous PSPP tube files. I have not found any way to use them in VS. Jan Piros did claim that they will be somehow implemented.

With PSPP X3, one can create video files/slide-shows.

Nice to have more control over RAW images-which I suggested before,
A.A.'s Ulead/Corel software:VideoStudio X4, PhotoImpact X3, PaintShop Pro X3, PaintShop Photo Express 2010.

Good to know PSP isn't dead. Sounds like some useful features, especially since I do most of my shooting in RAW.

Well, I'm not displeased with it so far. Had to tell it to open with the full editor by default (I fear it's taking a tip from Photoshop Elements and opening with the organizer...okay technically that's not bad but I'm one that when I open an image it's from Windows Explorer. I'm sure others will find it nice though :D ) but that's not so bad.

The new look of the graphite interface is alright.

Was pleasantly surprised by the object extractor. In my opinion it may have even worked better than the Background Remover plugin that came with X2. Still had to clone some areas back in that shouldn't have been erased but considering it's a tough photo to cut out I was very pleasantly surprised.

Sadly, other than allowing you to save layer style presets, they didn't see a need to give better controls to Layer Styles. Though I pretty much expected that was the case.

Still have a lot more to see...and will be missing the webinar today. But it is pretty good. And I haven't noticed too much of a slowdown yet on my larger images, though obviously it's not lightening fast either :D I mean they are pretty big pictures. This is either something I'm doing or the improved support for dual-core processors. I'm hoping it's them.

I upgraded from PSP 7 to PSP 12.5 last October. Corel sales said there was a 90 day window for a free upgrade to X3, unfortunately I was at 92 days.:( Thought this info might be of some use to others on this forum.

I'd try contacting them though. They might be generous with the 90 days or offer you some sort of discount... worth a try I think.

Hi Tim. I should have been more clear in my post. I called Corel sales yesterday to inquire about a upgrade to X3, that's when I was told about being outside the 90 day window by 2 days.

Anyone have any thoughts about X3.... I got it and like the RAW processing. Not too crazy about the organizer (unless I am missing how you can leave it open all the time) or the fact that the help file appears to be online. Haven't tried it yet, but the new remove tool looks very interesting.

No, the organizer does require that you start Paint Shop Photo Pro to use it. So if you don't close Paint Shop Pro and just switch back to the organizer you can leave it running. But that's about it.

Very similar to my experience with Photoshop Elements. Unless I missed something with that as well.

Sorry, I meant leave the organizer open while you edit photos (ie, the editor is open).... I guess I see it as taking extra time to open to select a photo, then open the editor.
