Changed or Moved Shotcut Error

Post by rckowal »

On the advice of Corel, I manually uninstalled & clean reinstalled VS 11.5 (licensed) in an effort to fix a no burn issue.

When I go to start VS, the usual graphic icon is missing. It is replaced by a "Problem with Shortcut error warning" message box. Clicking on it, brings up the message " The item 'vstudio.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly".

Thinking some thing may have gone wrong during the installation, I manually uninstalled & clean reinstalled a second time. Both times, the same error warning occurred. I've looked through the VS folders/files but there is no VS shortcut icon in there.

What's wrong here & how can I fix it?

Will VS load if you try from the all programs menu? Where is the icon located that you click on?

Thanks for replying Darryl.

No, VS will not load from the All Programs menu. The shortcut there is identical to the one on my desktop. I've tried clicking each of them & get the same "changed or moved" error message from both.

Sounds like just the icons not working. Try this. Go to My Computer" Double click the C: Drive Double Click "Program Files" Double Click Corel" Double Click Corel Video Studio ??" Scrol down (a long way) an double click "vstudio.exe" and see if that opens your program. If it does then go back and right click on that same file and choose "Create Shortcut" Drag that to your desktop and delete the original icon.

John, Thanks for replying.

You're partly right that the icon isn't working, but more importantly the VS.exe file is missing which is why the icon can't work.

Along with many other ideas, I tried your suggestion as well. There is no VS.exe file to be found anywhere. I've even tried a utility called "ShortcutsMan" which automatically searches the whole machine for this shortcut but it just doesn't exist on this PC.

In my mind the issue here is how do I get the VS.exe file installed (or restored). Two tries doing clean installs of VS from a licensed CD, preceded by manual uninstalls didn't do it.

If you are installing from a CD provided by Corel then there should be a repair option. without uninstalling anything just run the setup.exe file again and the repair option should present itself.

If this still fails to work, or if you are not presented with a repair option then try copying the entire contents of the CD to a hard drive folder.
Next step - rename the folder
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio\
to become
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudioX
This will fool your computer into thinking that VideoStudio is not installed,
Run the installation file setup.exe which is now on your hard drive and it will then recreate the folder
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio\
Hopefully this time correctly.

If this works you can then delete the folder you renamed earlier
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudioX

SJ1805, Thanks for the reply Steve.

I'm delighted to report that your suggestion brought an end to a "week from hell" trying to get VS 11 to work again. Doing the "Repair" from the boxed CD fixed the missing shortcut/exe file as well as an earlier issue with inability to use the burn function. Now my VS 11 works as it's supposed to.

Something that I couldn't help noticing is the fact that Corel Support never suggested this idea. I have also been in touch with them for five days now about these issues. Although they offered lots of ideas (maybe I should call them guesses) none of them worked.

In my mind, this incident really demonstrates the value of this user to user forum.

Maybe you should contact them again and tell them what DID work. Perhaps they will add that to their list of guesses and it may help someone in the future.
