DL Layer Break Issues

Post by dac »

Hello-

VS X2 - 12.0.98.1

I am having difficulty with DVD+R DL layer breaks. After completing the edits, saving the work as a video file and attempting to burn with any third party software I keep getting "Can't find Layer Break" or something close to that depending on the program. I use IMGBURN predominately. This occurs whether I save the video file in VSX2 as a DVD video or an ISO file and attempt to burn to a DVD+R Dual Layer disc.

I have to resort to another 3rd party software to insert layer breaks etc. which is not only time consuming but shouldn't have to happen.

I only use Verbatim discs and this has happened on different burners on different PC's. However the disc make is moot since I cannot get to the point of burning.

Is there a setting in VS that I must make in order for this to be avoided?

Thank you.

I'm not an expert on this... Somewhere I read that the layer-break has to be at a chapter-point. (It's my understanding that this is requirement of the DVD spec., not Video Studio.) Do you have a chapter somewhere around the middle of the program?

I have run into the same problem.

Here is my solution. I render the entire movie to a "DVD" file from VS12 -- (AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS). Then I put imgburn into the "Build" Mode and proceed to burn either a disk OR an image file.

imgburn will figure out all reasonable layer break points for you and give you some options.

VS does not create a layer break at all, nor does even the much fancier and more expensive ($599) Vegas Pro. If you burn an image from either of these, you will not get it to burn with any burner software that I know of. The ONLY burning software that has NEVER failed me is good old FREE imgburn.

If imgburn can't find a break point, it will give you a dreadful message, indicating that you are dead meat. At this point, you will need to use the method from the imgburn forum and create a layer break with VOBreaker.

The LB problem often occurs when you have very long spaces between your chapter points. imgburn 'tries' to find a chapter break for the layer break position and if there isn't one at a reasonable place, it apparently gives up.
Keep on thumpin'
