How to know when preview rendering is complete?

Hi Bill

This is what I see when loading video files

1 / I right click the timeline and select Insert Video, The Open Video File window shows.
2 / I browse the hard drive for my video files.
These are Dv-Avi, there are 122 files in the folder, (9.5 Gb) I select all.

3 / I select Open¡Xthere is about a 8 second delay, then a window opens called ¡¥Change Clip Sequence¡¦-I click OK
A progress bar shows the files being loaded, this took 25 seconds, I have a lot of files here.

4 / The files show in the timeline, there is a delay of about 10 seconds before the timeline becomes available to allow me to edit.

I repeated the above using 20 files (2.1Gb)
There was little or no delay to any of the times above, the longest being the progress bar in 3, this took about 3 seconds.
As soon as the files hit the timeline I was able to edit.

The times to load the video depends on many factors, the type of video file probably has the most effect. Trying to load the highly compressed types Mov for instance may cause VS to cough a little.

Using HD will slow the editing till the Smart Proxy files are created.

Other than that its instant, well not worth worrying about

Hi

Project Playback unfortunately can be a little slow, but we should be able to improve things to a more tolerable level.

I¡¦m sure it has been asked and apologise if you have answered but what type of files are you using?
Some types of highly compressed Mov for instance will cause problems.
But we need to know what files you are using.

Things you can try:-
Smart Proxy will improve playback.
Check the Tools ¡V Smart Proxy file Manager to see if your proxy files have been created.
If not right click a clip in the timeline and select Create Proxy files, may take some time.

Your Computer
I assume you are running a duel or quad core processer.
Keep your pc clean and do a defrag.

Look at the VS help files Appendix D System Tweaks,

Thanks for the suggestions for improving the preview speed, Trevor. I wasn't complaining about the speed....I was only asking if there was an indicator as to when the proxy file had been created so I could start editing the clip(s) without the hesitations when running it. You answered that by suggesting I look at the proxy queue manager. That's what I really needed to know.

BTW, I'm running AVCHD files from an HD Sony camcorder.

Thanks for the help!

I know exactly what you mean

Bill, for what it's worth, I knew exactly what you meant when you first asked your question.
I too just started using Video Studio after using other products for years. I have been looking for the same kind of indicator. I drag a video clip down to the timeline and hit the play button. If the video file is large then playback is choppy. I too would like to know when it will not be. I have smart proxy enabled, and sometimes I will click on the clip in the timeline and choose "create smart proxy file". Maybe that does something, but I would not know because there is no indicator.
I often just browse the web for a minute and then check back to see if I have smoooooth operations yet.
Happy editing.
