How to know when preview rendering is complete?

Post by billludwig »

Is there some indicator that I'm not seeing that lets you know when the preview rendering is complete in order to avoid the constant stop-and-start of the preview?

Thanks,

Rendering

Post by Ken Veal »

If yoiu mean rendering a video file- you should be seeing a % progress bar and after 100% it dissapears and the rendered file goes to where ever you specified on your hard drive.................Ken

Thanks, Ken, but that's not what I mean. When you first drag a video clip to the time line, and try to play it, a large clip is jerky until it has fully loaded. Sometimes this takes minutes. It would be nice to have a progress bar that shows when that 'rendering', or loading, is complete so you can view the clip uninterrupted.

Without knowing your system config and what kind of files you are working with it is impossible to offer a solution. Kind of like calling your mechanic and saying "my car doesn't work".

Please read the following and supply the requested info:

This has nothing to do with my system, it is a VS programming issue. For example, I use Pinnacle Studio and Photodex Producer. Both apps give an indication when a clip has finished loading. Yes, you can begin work on the clip prior to it being completely loaded, but it is a stop-and-start process. It's usually easier to wait until the clip has fully loaded, then start editing it.

If you drag several large clips to the time line, and a couple of audio tracks, it can take several minutes for it all to load. Try editing during this loading process, and you get almost nowhere. It would just be nice to have an indication as to when this loading process is complete -- just like the other apps I mentioned.

Fine. Then I can't help. Maybe somebody else will look in their crystal ball and provide an answer for you.

BTW, if it was a programming issue it would affect everyone. I, for one, don't have that problem, even with my "mighty" P4 machine.

Perhaps you have "High Quality Playback" selected but as we don't even know what version of the software you are using it's a bit of a guessing game!

Hi billludwig

Video Studio uses a process called Smart Proxy.
This automatically creates small files that replace the larger files allowing editing and playback to be easier/smoother.
The process is activated by inserting files with a larger frame size than normal, options can be viewed from File - Preference - Smart Proxy

This process takes some time, you can view the Smart Proxy process by going to Tools-Smart Proxy Queue manager and File Manager.
Once created the files play back improves.

So if you are working with HD then Smart Proxy may be what you are experiancing.

What are the properties of your video files????????

If you are just experiancing a time delay from adding/importing files to them actually be viewable then thats a different matter.

Please complete your profile to include your pc configuration.
How much Ram have you installed on the pc.?

You first ask that you want to know how you can tell when preview rendering is complete, but further on you say when you first drag a clip into the time line you want to know when it is fully loaded and ready to view and, I assume, edit. I have noticed that when I first drag a clip into the time line it is just a solid color, I will know when it is fully loaded when the thumbs of the clip or clips with the name of the clip or clips appear in the time line. I am not sure how long it takes but for an hour of clips it does not take more than a minute.

I guess I've done a poor job asking my question. This has nothing to do with my system, proxy files, RAM, etc. I simply wanted to know if there is an INDICATOR that the clip has been fully loaded to the time line, and editing can begin without the hesitations experienced with a partially loaded clip. Apparently, no one here has used software that has that feature.

Thanks anyway.

In order to comply with forum posting requirements, I have entered my 'System Configuration' info. Also, I am running VisualStudio Pro x2 -- version 12.0.98.0

Agree with Steve but there is an indicator. When you load a clip/s into the timeline or library an oblong window appears and the clip name is shown and a darker blue bar moves from laft to right. This happens very quickly so you may have missed it. I have just loaded clips totalling 51 mins and they loaded within a few seconds but I did manage to get a screen shot that clearly shows he loading bar. CAn take a movie clip of this happening if you wish but can't do that until tomorrow, am pushed for time right now.
Here's the screenshot anyway,

Thanks for taking the time to reply and post the pic, John. I understand what you are saying, but to follow on with this....yes, the clips load very quickly for me also, but...let's load a few clips, then drag some fading effects between the clips and click on a starting point a little bit prior to one of the fade effects. The video starts to run, then hesitates for a second or two, then runs a little more, then hesitates, etc. NOW, stop it, and let it crunch and grind for a minute or two, run it again, and it plays smoothly.

I just wondered it there was an indicator (like a progress bar, or twirling circle) that would let me know when that crunch and grind process is finished. Sorry if my terminology is unclear.

Have you got "Smart Proxy" on or off?
