Well, if you are talking about editing and playing back AVCHD, all I can say is that you have a miracle computer...

I'm now totally confused. First we are transferring from the media card to the PC's hard drive all OK, now we are back to "capturing" which I thought one did with analogue video from a VHS tape of mini tape. I think I will bow out of this thread until I understand what James wants to achieve. If he is saying that when he previews his clips in VS12 they are jerky that's because what he is looking at is only an "on the fly" preview. It bears no relationship to the quality of the finished video when viewed on a compaible player.

Let's just get this straight.

You transfer your avchd file from your card to the pc.

Is this video now jerky?

In VS and other media players?

Transfer this same file back to the memory card and put it in your camcorder, does this play back jerky?
Yes, you have a pc problem causing the data transfer to fail.
No, you have a pc problem that is not allowing you to see the file properly.

Do you know why VS crashed?
WHat had you done just before VS crashed?
WHat have you done to the pc since you re-installed it?
Did you follow the instructions for totally removing all traces of VS before re-installing, as you need to.
Do you ensure all other uneeded apps are not running when trying to edit.

Although like Ken, I am suprised you managed to do this succesfully previously as your pc is seriously underpowered for this type of work,.

HDC-SD9

HI
Apologies to all.
I have now phoned Panasonic and they confirm I cannot capture from this camera. Ican only transfer from the hard disc.
It is sometime since I used the camera on Video Studio and cannot remember the editing so jerky. I am getting old!
I now believe what Ken told me and I am going to get a new computer.
I have downloaded a patch from Corel but this has not helped.
Incidentally, I have edited the jerky images onto the timeline, and exported to a DVD and the result was perfect
If anyone can suggest a lap top computer (make and Model) to edit in good order, I would be most grateful.
Thanks for all your help.

James,
Do you really need a Laptop. A decent PC and a good sized, say 20in monitor will serve you much better than a laptop. Cheaper to start with, spec for spec, much easier and cheaper to upgrade in the future. A PC lends itself to additional PCI cards for graphics, sound, fire wire etc whereas a laptop is restricted to using just what you start with. Laptops when used for long periods on the mains adapter get hot and processors do not like being overheated. A laptop was designed for travelling not static use, hence the name. But the choice in the end is, of course, yours. Are you willing to post here your budget figure for your new PC?

i7 processor, ideal for dealing with hd files.
A 1920 x 1200 screen so will show your hd files in full resolution.
6gb ram, great
1gb ram graphics card great
500gb hard drive, good enough for transferring your files, but I'd look at a 1TB ext drive for working on large movies.
Win 7 64 bit, great for accessing all that memory etc, but will probably mean you will have to update things like printers/scanners if they are old and no 64bit drivers are available.
£1989.. ouch. Not good, but what you need to pay to be up with it these days.

Or, you could get something like this as a desktop
Asus Ramage II motherboard (LGA1366)
Core i7 920 CPU (2.66GHz quad core)
6Gb DDR3 RAM, max of 12Gb supported
Single 1Tb Western Digital hard drive
Gainward ATI HD3850 512mb Graphics (DVI-D, D-Sub and HDMI outputs)
Coolermaster midi chassis with 500w power supply
Dual layer DVD burner

Which I built for £600

There would also be no keyboard, mouse or monitor with this base unit and windows is not included in the price, as I have an MSDN sub.
