project playback quality

Post by Trevor Andrew »

Hi All

I have been using VS 9 for a few weeks, just getting into the program, checking out the new software.

Project playback seems worse now that I have installed VS 9, stutters both audio and video, interesting the longer I play the clip the smoother it gets.

I have a 10 minute Mpeg2 file.(pal-Dvd template) This is the only thing in the timeline.

When I play using the clip ‘mode’ all is ok My cpu runs at 40%

When I play in project mode I get the problems. My cpu hits 100%

System info:-

AMD athlon xp2500
Ram 1024 Mb
Graphics Card Ati AiW 128 pro
OS Win 2K
Ample spare hard drive
Fully defragged
All recommended system tweaks.

Any thoughts
With Thanks

Hi Trevor...

How do you find out the percentage your cpu is running at? Is this available in VS9 only or also VS8?

Thanks, Dan

I have Norton System Works installed,
This has an option to view monitors on the desktop.
The monitors are docked to the side of the desktop and are always in view.

Although i would have thought you should be able to get this info from the windows system.

Windows XP Task Manager (i.e. the old Ctrl+Alt+Del), third tab, shows CPU and RAM usage in both numerical and graphical forms.

Thanks Ken, I have just checked and it works the same for Win 2000 as well.

Do you get a big difference in CPU usage between Project and Clip Playback?

You might find that at the times your cpu usage goes up to 100% because NORTON is doing one of it's things. NORTON is a resource hug.

As a general rule, video editing systems should not have any virus scanners etc. running during processing of video.

Try to disable your NORTON (if you can) and see if the problem persists.

Ok

I have disabled Norton Auto Protect

The playback in project is the same at 100%
In clip mode it drops by 60% to 40%

Why the big difference.

Is it just my system or does this affect you as well?

Playing in project mode, I have between 66% and 75% CPU usage showing, but that is with nothing disabled, including my anti-virus, anti-spyware, browser and MSN Messenger all running. But I have 2 GB RAM running dual channel and a P4 3.0GHz CPU with hyper-threading. In clip mode, this drops to 57% - 59%. I would imagine a computer with less resources (esp. RAM??) and some background programs running, would easily get up towards 100%, but perhaps someone more expert in such matters than I, might have other views...
