Houston we have a different problem

Post by tonyjer »

Discovered my ¡§boxed¡¨ VS8 with serial number gathering dust in the loft so I was able to install the upgrade Pro X2 I had previously downloaded.

Got back to doing some Sherlock Holmes esque work on my holiday project and have established the following:

• The complete project consists of 13 clips in the timeline, is 2 hs 19 mins long and produces an mpeg file which is 7.37 Gb. This produces the infamous and coherent ¡§Convert step got some problems¡¨ error message when you try to create a Disk image
• I have systematically and forensically broken the project down clip by clip and produced mpeg files for clip 1, clip 1-2, clip 1-3¡K. right up to clip 1-13 (as above). Each mpeg file successfully converts to ISO apart from 1-13!
• The mpeg file representing clips 1-12 is 1 hs 56 mins long and produces an mpeg which is 6.15 Gb.
• I also created an mpeg from clip 13 which also converts to ISO
• I have done nothing with menus and chapters etc

I probably need Robert Downey Junior and Jude Law to help me now as my logic and analytical skills are all exhausted.

Is 13 clips one clip too many perhaps? I know I created projects in the past with more.

Any advice at this stage would relieve much stress and improve my relationships within the family.

Adios

Hi Antonio

Wow thats very through¡K..glad you are up and running again

Using your main project, what is in the timeline below the 13th video clip.

I assume this is the last clip and therefore would probably have closing titles, audio??????

What are the properties of the video files, are they are all the same?

You seem to be using the burner module to convert your project/s
Have you tried Share Create Video File same as first clip, will use the videos properties.
At least this option will rule out or confirm any problems in the burner module.

Unless you are using duel layer discs then you need to drastically reduce the bit rate to produce a file under 4.3 Gb.

Hi Trevor

Responses as follows:

1. When you say "anything below the 13th clip" do you mean when in storyboard view? If so nothing.
2. 13th clip is final one but has no audio or closing titles (Sea World Orlando!)
3. Video file properties are identical. mpeg 2 lower field first, 720 *576 PAL, 16.9 bit rate 6000kbps, LPCM audio.
4. Lost on the Share/Creat video file same as first clip advice. When I select this you are then invited to create another avi file. Is that right? Never used this before. Do you then use that file to burn the mpeg? How does that prove or disprove problems with the burner module?
5. I think this is an old chestnut but have always used 6000kbps for the mepg, then ISO using identical properties, then Shrink to reduce the ISO and finally Roxio to burn the ISO onto DVD. Know it's not textbook but always worked for me.

Many thanks

Hi

I am aware of your preference in creating the iso and using DVD shrink.
But as there seems to be a problem creating the iso then you should try to create a video file first.

I had thought you were working with Mpeg files, but now think your originals are DV-Avi, is this correct..........

OK
Open your project
Change your Project Properties to match your video files properties.
File ¡VProject properties ¡V Edit¡K.
mpeg 2 lower field first, 720 *576 PAL, 16.9 bit rate 6000kbps, LPCM audio (I would use digital Dolby audio)

Note :-When you change the properties choose Pal-DVD from the compression tab, not Mpeg 2.

Now do this¡K¡K.

Share create video file¡XSame as Project Settings, choose a save location and give the new file a name
When complete, open a new project-change the project properties to match the video files properties

Share--Create Disc ¡V DVD -Add Media, add your video file

Continue to create your iso.

Convert step got some problems

Post by Trevor Andrew »

Hi Tony
Post edited---Sorry but I may have misunderstood your reply.
I read it as failing in the main timeline during the render process.
Can you confirm how far you got with the process. At what point did it fail

Although the rendering in the timeline failed, its good in a way that we should be able to disregard the burner module as being the culprit.
The problem seems to be with your project and the final file. Unlucky 13 I suppose.

As the last file rendered ok on its own would indicate that the file is ok,
although i wouldn't rule that out.
How big in time and Gb was this 13th video.?

Do you have a transition between the 12th and 13th clip?
Have you applied any additional edits to the 13th, like Video Filters/Pan & Zoom etc?

File sizes
I am not aware of any limit to the file sizes other than disc capacity, but that is via the burner module, and that¡¦s ok.

With that in mind I am creating an iso 2 hrs 22 mins to your properties.
I think it will take a little time to render.
I¡¦ll let you know
Ok 2 hrs 27 min later and i have an Iso file 7.7 Gb, no problem with file size.

Trevor

1. mpeg was created but process failed when I went to burner screen to convert the mpeg to ISO. That awful, incoherent message appears as soon as you click burn.
2. I've deleted that individual mpeg but the 13th clip is 23 mins long.
3. There is a transition between 12th and 13th clips.
4. No special editing of any sort with the 13th clip.

Will now splice and dice the 13th clip to see if I can pinpoint the glitch.

Thanks for your continuing assistance.

Convert step got some problems

Post by Trevor Andrew »

Hi Tony

Sorry for any confusion, if you have successfully created a Mpeg then we should be able to rule out a corrupt project.

The problem seems to be with the burner module.

If you tried to create the Iso using the Mpeg then there would be no additional rendering of the Mpeg.
The process will/should start with convert menu, then multiplexing etc.

So at what point does it actually fail.?

You are best to start a New project Share Create Disc adding your Mpeg this will speed up the burn process.
Creating the iso should only take a short time may be 30 minutes ish.

Have you tried creating the iso without Menu¡¦s?

And in the middle of the three icons in the bottom left of the burner screen, make absolutely sure that the little box beside 'Do not convert compliant mpeg files' is ticked... On a very quick reading of the thread, this point does not seem to have been made...

Hi Trevor

1. I always select new project, share create disk etc and then select mpeg, change properties to accord with mpeg etc etc. The message is generated when you go to the burner module and select disk image. You initially get the message that file size is bigger then project but I often get this. You then elect to proceed and get another message stating that it will take some time.. When you OK that the "convert step got some problems appears".

Incidentally, the mpeg is 6.7 so the ISO initially shows up as requiring 13.4 Gb (guess thats right but I have plenty of room anyway). What's odd is that after the message the space needed on hard drive changes to 67.7Mb!!

2. Have not created any menus.

3. The "never convert compliant mpeg is ticked".

I have now split the problem clip into 2 and tried creating the ISO with these added separately to the rest of the project. Hey presto it works with clips 12+ the first half of the last clip and clips 12 and the second half of the last clip. Unfortunately it does not work with the complete clip 13!!!!

The only other thing to note is that this was the project where I had to resize aspect ratio to 16.9 etc. I think this is a red herring as it didn't affect the first 2 hour DVD of my holiday.

Can anyone provide an anglo saxon translation of "Convert step got some problems"?????????

Thanks

T
