Camcorder recommendations please?

Post by DBrooker »

I've asked this question before but it's been well over a year ago - I've been dealing with some serious health problems and am just starting to get back on my feet - I have VS 11.5 Plus and would appreciate the best recommendation for a camera in the $3-400.00 range - Not really insterested in HD at this point - Last time the recommendation was a Canon but I can't remember the model number and it's probably no longer available so any and all input is appreciated as to what is available now - Thanks - DB

Do you mean camcorder?
A camera takes photographs, a camcorder takes videos.

Hi DBrooker
Welcome back and all good wishes to a speedy recovery. I've found your previous post on this subject that you might like to read. It's here:

I have a Canon HG10 and am delighted with the results I get. Mind you I use VS x2 Pro. Have never used any earlier editions of the software. An HG10 would be within your budget and leave some spare to upgrade your software. Like most things everyone has their favorite, what suits one does not necessarily suit all. You can always try before you buy with the software but unfortunately you can't do that with a camcorder. Now there's an idea :wink:

John - Thanks for finding my old post and your reply - I think you mis-read my budget - I have 3-4 hundred $$ and not 3-4 thousand $$ - Does anyone have any good or bad comments about the Canon DC410 or the Canon FS 200 or FS21? I mainly just want to shoot and edit my own wildlife videos - I want to keep things realtively simple at first - Any comments are welcomed - Thanks - DB

Hi DB
In fact I did read your price range correctly as 3 to 400 pounds but what I didn't do was check on the latest price for the Canon HG10. I bought mine from Amazon in September 2009 for 370 pounds! Seems like they have gone up in price or I got a particularly good bargain!

Distance selling regs as they are in the UK allow for just that. Order over the internet, try the cam, if you like it keep it, if you don't tell them within 7 days you want to return it and all it'll cost you is return postage.

Without being able to try before you buy;
Due to compatibility issues arising from the various disk types and formatting used by camcorders or stand-alone dvd recorders,
Suggest
If you have provision to in-put 4/6 pin Firewire on your pc;
I would suggest a camcorder with a firewire (IEEE 1394/DV/i-link) output just in case the optical drive on the pc and/or VS software cannot recognise the non/finalised disks from the camcorder.

Shim, firewire was invented as a way of getting data from a digital camcorder (minidv) to a pc in real time. Cams that use optical discs/hard drives/memory cards use usb to transfer data.

Oops, sorry guess I`m stuck a little in the past, although this does warrant replenishing blank minidv tapes before they become obsolete.

A couple of ¡§Archived¡¨ HDD cams with firewire outputs;

I don't think we have to worry about that for a while.

The Panansonic NVGS240 the prefix before the number might be different for NTSC districts)

I have the 180 and I still like what it does.

Recommendation for an SD camcorder = MiniDV Tape

Connections including (in/out) : Firewire, USB, S ¡VVideo and composite.

Considering the ¡§Auto¡¨ compression rates applied with DVD/HDD cams whether HD or SD.
