What accounts for additional size?

Post by nelsh »

I asked DVDMF5 to join (4) four mpg files with a total size of 3.25 GB.

I then chose EXPORT/Fast Export DVD compliant. Ulead went into labor and the bar at the bottom of the window shows that it is trying to compress 5.9 GB down to 4.7 GB. How could files that separately totaled 3.5 GB, joined be 5.9? There are not any added menus or such.

Thanks for helping this ignorant newbie.

File size is related to bitrate. The bitrate for one or more of your files is getting changed.

If all of your files have the exact same format & bitrate, and if they are all DVD compliant MPEG-2, etc., then it's possible to join the files without changing the bitrate or total file size.

As you may know, MPEG is lossy compression (as are most audio/video formats). So, with a given format there is a trade-off between bitrate and quality. (Higher bitrate = better quality = bigger files.)

You can approximate file size with the following formula:
File Size in MB = (Bitrate in kbps x Playing Time in minutes) / 140
This is the total combined audio & video bitrate, and of course, if you're using a variable bitrate, it's the average bitrate.
