vs8 dvd creation problems

Post by scwest »

I've been using vs8 for quite some time (patch applied). I recently got a dvd burner and I keep getting errors when converting videos prior to burning (in the disc creation process).

One error reads "unable to convert video" and occurs when the video is well into the conversion process.

The other error says "all or some of the data is not compatible with the mpeg version"

I cannot find any help on either of these errors, and I have no idea why I'm getting them. The files work just fine when editing or combining. I'm just getting the errors in the DVD disc creation process.

I'm trying to convert 2 types of video: One is MOV (544x408 at 15fps)and the other is wmv (640x480). The mpeg compatibility error seems to go away when I remove the wmv files, but the MOV conversion error still comes up when converting the MOV files.

The machine is an AMD opteron with 1GB ram if that matters.

What's going on?

Thanks

Steve,
You should not be "converting Videos" while trying to burn a DVD. You need to read and follow the procedure outlined in the top sticky post.

Your source files are unusual, to say the least. If you are intending to put them on an NTSC DVD, they will have to be converted to 720x480 at 29.97 fps.

IMHO, you would have a better chance of success by starting with video that had been captured with the above properties.

Hi JC,

Yes I have been reading that post as well as the links. The wierdly formatted MOV files are from my konica milota digital camera.

I have put a project together and have been trying to convert to mpeg format you point to with save video file. Unfortunately, I'm getting random "application errors" during the conversion. I restart and get another app error at a different point in the process.

I've just rebooted and seem to be about halfway through the save as file without another app error (fingers crossed).

Funny the program doesn't immediately tell you when you are burning a video to dvd that it doesn't want to do conversion on the fly. That would have been very helpful for us newbies :) Instead it chugs along and spits up...

Thanks for your help!!

Success :) I converted all my video clips to the NTSC-DVD format per message 1. I cleared the timeline and then added them into the share/createdisk area.

All went well and I got a nice DVD of all the stuff that plays great.

I played around with mpeg compression between 70% and 100%. The latter made a little bit larger file, but no real difference.

At any rate, I have the workflow that I need, and it looks like smooth sailing from here on.
