Do I need all of the DivX stuff?

Post by Diazruanova »

Hi everybody,

I am new to the forum and first of all I would like wish all the members the best of the best for this 2010 :)

I just downloaded for a 30 day trial, the uLead DVD Movie Factory 6
and installed it already (working fine btw). My main intention with MF is just to make DVD¡¬s of my home movies, edit them and burn them so they can be playable on any regular DVD player, just to watch on any TV set or give the DVDs as presents to my family members, nothing fancy, and also take advantage of the burning capabilities of the program like making copies, burning data, making music CDs etc. and use it as my one and only burning program (kissing good bye to CDBurning XP perhaps?) BUT I was watching that with the MF installation I got several Divx programs:

1.- DivX Codec
2.- DivX Converter
3.- DivX Player (using VLC)
4.- DivX Plus Directshow filters
5.- DivX Plus Web Player

Are ALL of these needed for my above purposes?

Thank You very much guys and have a happy 2010 !!!

No, you don't need that DivX stuff. Some DVD players can play DivX discs, but it's non-standard, and not part of the DVD spec.

It's a popular format on the Internet because the files are smaller. (It uses MPEG-4 whereas regular DVDs are MPEG-2.)

Thank you very much Doug,

So, not even the DivX Codec is needed?

You only require the DivX Codec if you intend to create or play DivX files.
These are mostly played over the internet but there are some (not many) standalone DVD Players that can play DivX files.

If you only intend to create/play traditional DVD's then you do not need it.
