I doubt that it is crashing because of the relinking in general, but because it is relinking what sounds like a corrupt clip.
Try rendering your project without the problem clip and see if that solves it.

Hmm.. doesnt look like a corrupt clip after all. I reverted back to the files on the external hard disk as it wouldnt relink to the files on the C drive.
I did a render and this time it crashed at 31%. It was at the end of a clip as usual however its had no problems with the clip rendering here before.

Just to add, when i try and relink using the current libraby (without the reset) it gets so far on the relink then stops with an 'an invalid argument was encountered'. I have to close VS and then reopen and I can continue to relink. This happens on videos, images and audio.
I'm thinking of putting this in a VMware Pc thats totally clean and seeing what happens then. does anyone know if it runs OK in a vmware environment?

How infuriating!
As a final test I created a new project and added every single clip to the timeline with 1 second crossfade between clips. I then did a smart render and this worked first time.
Im really confused now because I have had one sucess with a smart render on the problem project but thereafter it failed.
What do you guys make of this??

THanks Ken
So it looks like my project is doomed to be done again from scratch?
I even tried updating my klite codec pack and upgrading to vista SP2 but same problem. Whats odd is that this same problem happened on my laptop so i moved the video files to my desktop machine and then it rendered fine the first time. Only subsequent renders have failed so i'm really confused.

Your mention of K-Lite rings all sorts of nasty alarm bells! Those mega codec packs are more trouble than they are worth IMHO!
If you simply install them with everything, then you are simply asking for trouble since the codecs they contain often conflict with each other in the same pack, not to mention all the codecs already on your computer. If you have to use them, then know which codec(s) you need and only download them -- not everything. I would advise you to uninstall the pack and then try your AVCHD again...

Thanks again Ken,
I did wonder if there was anything wrong with the codecs but i didnt come to that conclusion as it encoded all the files together with a 1second transition effect with no problems (although I have only tested this once).
I'm currently rendering the movie again on a windows XP virtual machine which literally has XP, VS and the klite pack. If this fails I'll get rid of the klite codec pack and try again. I have created some movie files using FRAPS which VS couldn't read without the codec pack. this captures your screen into a movie (i used it for capturing some google earth flybyes) and from what I read its in a totally uncompressed format (the files are pretty sizable to boot). I'm not sure why VS cant read them though.

Actually, just found it out myself!
So failing this render i'll try just installig that codec alone and see how I go!Where can I find the custom Fraps FPS1 codec?
The Fraps codec (FPS1) is put on the system when you install Fraps. If you've reinstalled Windows you will also need to reinstall Fraps in order to play back your movies.
Please keep in mind that if you want to give your raw footage to another person they will also need to have Fraps installed.
Well the vmware didnt work either. I tired without the k-lite codec pack but to no avail. I've come to the conclusion that VS is really a worthless peiced of crap concidering i'd have to pay for support on this issue dispite paying for the software. My PC is fine and have proved this by having the problem on 2 pcs and 1 vmware. Rubbish.
I think i'll ask for a refund and go to cyberlink

Hello again guys.
firstly, apologies for my rant above. I have been extreamly frustrated at the lack of support i can get from corel after spending a week solid perfecting a project only to find it won't render.
I demo'd power director which is a nice program but a little more clunky. When I rendered it not nowhere near as far in the render before it gave an out of memory error message and stopped rendering. I'm assuming this could well be the same thing causing VS to crash.
Can anyone offer me any help on how to get this resolved? I'm really confused as to why it gets almost to the end of the project and crashes.

Without going back and re-reading this entire thread I am not sure of this, can you burn any project, or is it just this one in particular? Can you insert the VS sample clips as a project and burn that?
