avi files not working?

Post by brucefl »

I am trying to put an avi file into VSX2, and it will not let me? It states it is not accessible? Then it says it may be an unknown file type, or copyrighted. I have tried a few with no luck.
I changed it to mpg, and it said no video information. I changed the extenstion to mp4 and there was no sound?
I am using windows 7. I have updated it. (though checking the site for newer updates)
suggestions? Bruce

I thought I run into this problem before and changind the ext. worked, though it could of been a different file type?

Bruce, you've been around long enough that you should know the rules.

As I'm sure you are aware avi is simply a wrapper, and can contain hundreds of different formats. Right click on the offending clip and record the properties here.

Sometimes I think I regress. Friend of mine is going to do some transfer of 8mm's, and he usually records them in .avi. I tend to use mpg's. He says avi is better although bigger files. The test file I did woudln't work in vsx2 so I downloaded one, which the properties are 848x480, data rate 1368, total bitrate 1480, 23 frames/sec, length 23.09.
Maybe I should have him do it in mpg, might be easier.
Thanks Gusy Bruce

That still doesn't tell us if they are DV-AVI, DivX, etc. Is there any mention of that?

And those are some whacky properties. For example, NTSC is 29.97 frames per second, PAL is 25. Yours is showing 23!

What device did you friend use to make the transfer?

hi

I downloaded the file from a site. I'll take another look at it. I right click and go properties? Yes I know it is a weird frame rate, but that is what it says

He hasn't done them yet. I give him a portable hd to transfer the files once he gets them recorded on his hd.

There is no mention of DV-AVI, DivX or any other. I know it will play in media player and the other players. Maybe what I will have to have him do is copy a small avi, to see if it will import.

Well, because of the strange properties I would guess that is the problem. You might try first converting them to DV-AVI or MPEG2 using something like SUPER.

Erm.... NO. That sounds like your right clicking the file in Windows Explorer which is not quite the same thing.

1. Open VideoStudio
2. From the time line Right click and "Import Video"
3. Find your "avi" file then click the button "Info".

Here is a screen shot from another thread.
