Video Studio 10 and Windows 7

Post by der_paul »

Hi everybody,
Christmas Child (is on duty here in Germany) had a notebook for me this year and I installed my fairly old ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO 10. First thing I noticed is, that all mpgs and sound-files have no sound. I think the software does not fully link to Windows 7, but I am just guessing. Secondly, I tried to import new clips from a DVD coming from my camcorder (used to work brilliant on my old PC), but this did not work either.

Is there an update-pack or patch to make VIDEOSTUDIO 10 run on Windows 7 or did I do something wrong? What exactly is VS X2 and is there an update from VS10 as well?

Every help and comment is appreciated.

Best wisher for 2010 to everybody!

Regard

Frank from Germany

No there is not, and will not be any patches for VS10 pertaining to Win7. It was the last actual Ulead version produced. VS 11 was developed by Intervideo/Ulead, and VS X2 Pro or Ultimate (which the X2 = 12), is the first real version developed soley by Corel.

There have been posts in other forums of this web board, where some of the older programs have been found to work on Win7. If Win7 is somewhat like Vista, you will need to make sure you have installed the Vista Patch for VS10. So far I have not looked at or migrated to Win7, so I'm of no real help on what you would need to do to get VS10 to work on it. I have read that the others have used the compatibility mode of XP SP3 or Vista, in Win7 to get the other programs to function.

Corel does provide for upgrade pricing to the current VS Pro X2, from VS6 through VS11. They have been running some good sales for VS Pro X2 recently. So check their website to see if those specials are still available in your area..

For the record, XP compatibility mode only works in Windows 7 Ultimate and, I think, Professional, but not Home Premium...

But the simple fact of the matter is that VS10 was written and issued long before Vista had appeared; and very much longer before Windows 7. So I would not be overly hopeful of getting it going...

Almost works ...

First of all a big THANK YOU for these quick responses.

I downloaded the VISTA-Pack and it seem to suit for Windows 7 quite well. My problem with the sound has disapeared, however, two more have just arrived ...

1. my clips does not seem to fill the preview-monitor on the top left a 100% anymore. There is a black frame all around my clips (not only these 16:9 stripes but all around the image) and I have no idea where it came from or how I can get rid of that

2. everytime I want to import a DVD from my camcorder, VS10 falls asleep. The list of files on the DVD which can be imported is shown, but as soon I click on the files, the ring appears (what used to be the sand-watch) and that's it. After some time Windows 7 tells me that the program is not responing any more

Aganin, I am happy to hear any comments and appreciate every little help. Maybe it's time to buy a new 64-bit piece of software, but this will only be the last step.

Regards and greetings from Germany!

VS 10 and Windows 7

Post by Gisela Richter »

This is indeed an interesting subject for anyone (still) using the good old VS 10. So if we update to Windows that will be the end of VS 10 it seems. My question would be: are the later versions of VS as good (or better)? I believe HDV editing is not possible with the later versions, or am I mistaken? Would anyone actually recommend a later version, better that VS 10? With a Canon HV 20 or 30 VS 10 works perfectly. I capture, then split by scene, edit, record back to cassette, view the result on the TV. It's like falling off a log. Admittedly, I'm not trying to compete with BBC quality.

Not sure where you got the idea that more recent versions do not edit HDV. Quite the contrary, I believe they are better suited for it.

As for whether X2 is good or better than v10, that of course is a matter of opinion. In my case I never upgraded to v11. Just didn't see the added benefits. However, for X2 the additional features were well worth the upgrade price, and I am glad I upgraded.

VS 10 and later

Post by Gisela Richter »

I've been absent for a long time but I remember Ken Berry warning me to stick with VS 10. Added "features" would not interest me. I avoid all gimmicks and prefer simplicity. I'm not saying that's better, but it suits me. Quality of the result and ease of use are the only features that count for me. I'd be happy to buy a later version if I'm really going to benefit from it.

Being able to edit HD, and working with Windows 7, I would consider features. :? But again, I can only speak for myself.

You would be better off downloading the trial and seeing how it works for you.

The only problem thee is that I don't think you can install the patches for Win7 to the trial version!

I would endorse Jeff's comment about later versions being able to edit HDV -- they certainly can. I now use X2 exclusively for my HDV editing (Canon HV20) and produce either HDV output or else an AVCHD hybrid disc, again using X2. And I have so far successfully edited and authored one HDV project on a computer with Windows 7 (and patches...)

As for my having suggested you might want to stick with VS10, I suspect that may have been both because you did not seem to be interested in the bells and whistles of later versions; but perhaps also because it may have been at a time when VS11.5+ was still on the market. I must say I found 11+/11.5+ problematic for a number of reasons. One of those was in exporting my edited HDV back to camera -- while VS10+ (with Canon patch) did this superbly (and still does!)
