It seems Corel has abandoned PI and adopted PSP as its flagship consumer targeted graphics tool.
MAGIX has basically dumped support for Photo Designer. It's hidden in the XARA Extreme packages but that's about it. PD7 has some interesting features.
Serif's PhotoPlus is pretty limited in capability and features, but has uses.
There may well be staffing and programming support issues for PI but it does seem a shame the GIF Animator, PI and other Ulead packages are being dumped.
Corel is facing off with MAGIX and Serif at this point in time. Both houses could jump to the forefront if they chose to expand their efforts.
The Ulead packages do not deserve to be dumped. The JASC packages do not deserve to be watered down. Corel has wealth of innovation and software engineering that seems doomed to be ignored.
PI and PSP essentially own the market - if Corel management is smart enough to recognize the fact. Otherwise someone will fill the void.
Corel would be wise to update PI and PSP and forget their marketing blunder.
PI, PSP, PhotoPlus and Photo Designer

I'm not sure how many of these are facts or not.
It is impossible to read through everyone's answers so I think somebody must have said this previously. It all comes to one point: The BIG FISH is always catching the smaller, in the business world it was always best to get rid of your competitors by buying them out if they become a problem. As we all see and nobody can deny this, Corel just dropped Ulead's products one after the other.
At this stage I am a very sad person, because by the time I've tested so many photo and video editing products and decided to spend money and buying what I thought were the best, not just for the sake of the lower price, but really for the ease of use etc., everything just collapsed with the Corel takeover.
I suppose just time will tell and in the meanwhile we have to look out for other software besides Corel.
