Timeline markers

Post by Roberto »

Hi,

is there any way to put some markers along the timeline so that it would be easy to jump from one point to another (maybe with some hot-key combination like CTRL+Left arrow or CTRL+Right arrow) ?

Yes VS has had a long time, non-published keyboard short-cut, [F5] to add Cue or Chapter markers.

Thanks.

Now, sorry for the dumb-like question, but can you tell me the difference between a chapetr and a cue point.
I figured out that the chapter points are useful for example to create a DVD menu.
Bu for the cue points, I haven't figured out how/when to use them.
Also, can you tell me how to move from one chapter/cue point to the next/previous one in the timeline window ?
Last question is out to remove a chapter/cue point: any way to do it with the mouse ? It looks like just click over it has no effect.

Thanks in advance for your patience :-)

Cue/Chapter points

Post by Ken Veal »

F5 takes you diect to the (yellow ) chapter point mode, I think most members will advise only using this at the burnig disc stage. The (blue) cue
markers serve the purpose of just giving you a reference point on the timeline only. You just keep clicking for as many as you want(up to a point)
To access the cue markers mode click on the small drop down drop arrow at the top left of the timeline next to + and - To delete chapter
points or cue points select the appropriate manager via the arrow and then in the manager box you can select and delete one by one or all as needed.........................Ken

Moving to points

Post by Ken Veal »

If you meant moving to another part of the timeline you use the white scroll bar at the bottom of the screen and or the white triangular just above it.You can adjust the length of the timeline view by clicking on the + - "magnifing glasses" or moving the slider inbetween them

Pressing the [F5] key does not take you to any mode. It is the keyboard shortcut for adding either Chapter markers or Cue markers to the timeline. It just depends on which you have active.

To use it press the play button, then when you want to insert a marker, just press the [F5] key. You can also stop the playback and insert a marker by pressing the [F5] key.

Now to skip from one marker to the next, in Project mode, hold down the [Shift] key while clicking the End ( >| or Home (|<) arrow buttons on the preview window playback buttons. This will allow you to jump ahead or back from marker to marker.

You can also use the Chapter/Cue point manger to jump to a specific marker. Just select where you want to jump to and press the Go to button. To delete a marker you can drag the marker down, off of the marker timeline, or as Ken stated, use the manager to delete one or as many as you wish.

The nice thing about having the ability to add Cue markers, is when you want to add clips, photos in-sync to music beats. In this case you would be going a little backwards from traditional means of editing. You would first insert your music. Then press play, and while playing insert cue markers to the beat of the music. Once that is done, go back and insert your clips or photos, aligning them to those cue markers. Many of the high-end editing programs have this ability. Some even will automate the process of inserting the clips to the cue markers..;)

Thank you very much for the prompt and exhaustive answers :-)
Last question (promised...!! At least for this topic ;-) ) : is there a way to give a name to a cue marker ?
Perhaps, this would make it easy to quickly move to the desired point from the chapter/cue manager.

Yes, just like Chaper markers. Highlight the time in the Cue manager, press the Rename button, and the rename dialog opens for you to type in a name for it.
