Missing audio options?

Post by thad »

Happy New Year!

I recently upgraded from VS9 to X2. When I "Create Video File," the audio format options I have are:

PCM
IMA ADPCM
CCITT A-Law
CCITT u-Law
GSM 6.10
Microsoft ADPCM

I seem to recall having more options than this with VS9, but I'm not sure if it's a VS issue or something that needs to be installed on my computer. I also have a new computer, so I don't have all the codecs and audio encoders that I had previously collected over time on my old computer. For example, I used to encode videos for youtube using Xvid. I always had the option for mp3 audio. Now, I only have the above options. I don't even know what most of those are. :lol:

Are there some plug-ins that I need to install?

Also, is there a manual that I can download somewhere? I didn't see anything in the install folder, the support area of Corel's site, or anything here at the forums. I've read through the Help file to try to figure this out, but it was pretty generic.

Happy to see you seem to have found your answers to most of your question. With some CODECS, only certain audio compressions are available. For example you can not select the audio codec for MPEG-2, the only one available is MPEG-2 audio. However for NTSC DVD (which is an MPEG-2 format) it allows you to select from LPCM, Dolby, or MPEG audio. I don't have the Xvid (avi) installed, but do have DivX. Under it, mine does show that MP3 is one of the audio compressions available.

As far as I know VS does not install MP3 codecs. You'll need to locate and install one if you want to compress your audio to MP3.

Ron,

I have Divx installed and am a licensed user. They gave away free licenses on their 5th anniversary, for one day only. Still, the only audio options I have are listed above.

I have the LAME mp3 encoder. Do I need to put the .dll in a certain folder for VS to see it?

Try re-installing your Lame mp3. I don't use MP3 for VS, since there's been numerous members that have had problems with it. I also use SwishMax, which uses Lame mp3. I've had problems with it getting messed up by VS.

FWIW, I got my version of DivX the same way..;)

Ron, there was no install for LAME using Windows 7. I just put the .dll in the Audacity plugins folder and then I was able to encode to mp3 with Audacity. Do I need to copy it to a VS folder? If so, which one? I tried a few different folders but it never showed up in the audio options.

In XP, there was an .inf (I think) file that had to be run to install LAME. When I searched for the latest version to install on my Win7 box, it said this wasn't required. I'll do some more research on this now.

Thanks for the help.

Just bear in mind what was hinted at by Ron: namely, that it is specifically the LAME MP3 codec which seems to cause the most problems for Video Studio. In those cases, we normally advise people to convert their mp3 audio to standard .wav...

Thanks for the follow up, Ken. I've used mp3 with no problems in VS9. I ONLY use it for my youtube videos though.

On my old PC, I installed so many video converters, codecs, audio editors, etc over the years, I can't say exactly what program made which conversion possible. Now that I'm starting from scratch with a new PC and X2, I don't know what I'm supposed to install. :lol:

That computer has been tied up today so I hope to get a chance to try some things soon.

I've reinstalled the LAME mp3 encoder and the option still doesn't show up. I've read multiple topics (including a guide on using Xvid for youtube profile) at this forum that say to select Mpeg Layer 3 as an audio option...as though we should all have it, but I still only see the original audio options listed at the beginning of this topic. Can anyone help me out on this?

Here's one example:
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... preference

If LAME mp3 causes problems with VS, that's one thing, but the fact that the option doesn't even show up at all, I believe that's a different problem.

Can anyone help?

You could try and run Sherlock to see what MP3 codecs you have installed on your system. http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html I think VS uses a different MP3 codec than Lame, especially with the latter operating systems like Vista and Win7. Just doing some checking on my own, I found out that the version of Lame installed on my Vista laptop, does not use the typical lame_enc.dll file. Audacity needs that particular for encoding mp3, and provides it's own installer and location on the computer, which is not under the windows\system_32 folder.

Running Sherlock shows only those video and audio codecs installed in the system_32 folder. It did not pick up on the lame installed for Audacity. I'm thinking that VS looks only under the system_32 folder for the audio codecs. If you're is not installed there, it will not see or use it.

Here's what Sherlock reported on my Vista system for MP3 audio codecs. Notice that Lame_enc.dll does not appear there. This is not all the audio codecs installed, the list is too long to publish here.

I also get those two. But I also get two separate instances of a Ulead mp3 codec in Common Files. In addition, I do in fact get LAME mp3 (though hadn't before known about it) as part of Camtasia. On top of that, my Dvico HDTV card also installed an mp3 decoder...

I don't know if either of the Ulead codecs was installed as part of X2 or from the two earlier versions of VS I also have on this computer. But at one stage or another, Ulead obviously did have its own mp3 codec...

After reading your post Ken, I checked out the Common Files for Ulead, and there is a separate MP3 codec, ulmp3acm.acm, which must be installed by one of the VS versions. On my desktop it would impossible to tell which one, however on my laptop, I only have VS 11, 12, DVD MF, and MSP8.. ;) I just recently installed MSP8, so it had to have been installed by VS11. I would also think that VS12 installs the same.

Since I don't have Win7, I'm not sure if the file structure is the same as Vista.

According to Sherlock, I have the following mp3 audio codecs in C:\Windows\SysWOW64.

Code: Select all

  MP3 Decoder DMO
     FileVersion       = 6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)
     CompanyName       = Microsoft Corporation
     FileDescription = Microsoft MP3 Decoder DMO
     InternalName      = mp3dmod.dll
     LegalCopyright = © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
     OriginalFileName  = mp3dmod.dll
     ProductName       = Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
     ProductVersion    = 6.1.7600.16385

  MP3 Decoder DMO
     FileVersion       = 6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)
     CompanyName       = Microsoft Corporation
     FileDescription = Microsoft MP3 Decoder DMO
     InternalName      = mp3dmod.dll
     LegalCopyright = © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
     OriginalFileName  = mp3dmod.dll
     ProductName       = Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
     ProductVersion    = 6.1.7600.16385

  MPEG Layer-3
     FileVersion       = 1, 9, 0, 0401
     CompanyName = Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen IIS
     FileDescription = MPEG Layer-3 Audio Codec for MSACM
     InternalName      = l3codec.acm
     LegalCopyright = Copyright © 1996-1999 Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen IIS
     OriginalFileName  = l3codec.acm.mui
     ProductName = MPEG Layer-3 Audio Codec for MSACM
     ProductVersion    = 1, 0, 0, 0
I'm not sure why the first one is listed twice. Still, I only have the original audio format options listed above.

From what I've seen Vista and 7 are very similar.

In my Corel Video Studio 12 folder, I have a ulmp3enc.dll.

In Common files, I have:
ulmp3acm.acm
ulmp3acm.xml
uldamp3.ax
