"New" Movie Filter?

Post by boxy »

Hey, guys. Been awhile since I've posted anything here.... But I'm still a VS11+ user!

Many of the people talk about shooting in 24p for that 'film look.' I was wondering if there's a way using VS11+ to get that look with straight video. The "Old Movie" filter is close but it removes the color. Has anyone come up with a formula or have suggestions to make video look like new film?

Hope I made myself clear. :)

Welcome back,

Main video track= clip with Old Film filter applied.
Overlay Track#1= copy of same clip in Main Track, Fit to screen, Transparency set to about 50%. You might also tweak the Color Saturation, and Contrast on the overlay clip..

This will allow the Old Film filter to still be seen, and have some color..

Also, X2 comes with some nice NewBlue Film FX. I'm sure you could buy them for v11+.

Whoa... That was fast! Appreciate it, mates.

I can't believe I didn't think of the overlay method because I have used it to make other effects 'by hand.' Thanks for that reminder!

Ha ha.... It's all good.

The old film filter was okay, not quite what I was looking for so I tried a few different filters. Watercolor, oil paint, comic, charcoal (when adjusted came pretty close). I used a slight bit of 'average' on the overlay that blurred it a pinch. Got close but still not completely satisfied.

Then I remember I have FXbench and went throught it's menu.... SUPER8! Yea, that's much better. Now, I still might want to tweak the tint and color balance a pinch but it does a pretty good job. And there's no need to overlay either, although I still might mess around with one just to see what I can come up with.

Just for the record, it's not like I absolutely must have this look, it's just something I thought of and maybe one day should I want to get that look I'll know what my options are. And thanks again for the replies!

EDIT*** On second thought.... I just rendered a clip with the SUPER8 filter and it's way too jittery. I thought it had potential. I was wrong. :( Oh, well.

Jeff (Black Lab) pointed out the New Blue Film FX. You might have a look at the samples on their web site. New Blue FX produces some of the best FX plug-ins and they're not cheap. I do know you can get the effect you're looking for with them..

http://www.newbluefx.com/film-effects.html?vmcchk=1

I just looked and the price just for the New Blue Film FX is about $160 (US). However they come with VS Pro X2, and you can upgrade it for only $49.99. Hummm, let's see to get those filters, spend $$$$, or upgrade my program AND get those filters for only $50..

Just a thought..

And what a thought it is! Maybe it IS time for me to upgrade. The newbluefx look nice, not to mention all of the new features with PRO X2.

I have one simple question. Will my VS11+ project files convert? I would hate to have to reedit all of my previous work if I wanted to work on any of them in PRO X2. Thanks again!

Each new version of VS is backwards-compatible with earlier versions. In other words, you can open project files made in earlier versions in later versions, but not vice versa. In X2, you can also save a project file in VS 11 and VS 10 formats...
