AVCHD, the PS3 and VS

Post by woolfie »

Hi there,

And firstly accept my appologies if this question has been answered elsewhere. I am trying to edit and then save AVCHD files from my pc to a hard drive to view them via my PS3 which i believe i can do if the files are in M2TS format but I am not able to see how to do this. When i go into the creat disk screen there appears to be a create AVCHD folders option which is greyed out. I assume this would allow me to save the m2ts files that i need to play. Can anyone suggest a better was of doing this or perhaps another storage method for my HD home movies?

Thanks in anticipation of your help in this matter.

Oh i am using the trial version of Video Studio does that matter? I previoiusly bought Movie factory but have the same problem with that!

Thanks Guys

Hi Andy
You are right, VS does not allow you to create the folders in the AVCDH share choice. However if your project is 30mins or less long then this is what I do.
Go to share "Create Disk" then choose "Blu-Ray" Create menu if you wish or uncheck Create menu icon. Click next then Next again. Uncheck "Create Disc" and check "Create Blu-Ray folders", making sure you browse to the folder where you want to store the folders. Click burn. This will create a folder at your chosen location called BDMV. Now open a third party burning prog like Nero, Roxio or the excellent free one called BurnAware Free. Put a blank standard DVD into the drive, choose "Create a Data DVD" and burn the folder BDMV. You need a Blu-Ray Player to play this disc but your PS3 is perfect for the job always assuming you have an HD TV of course. To see the M2TS files that this creates go to the BDMV folder open it and open the "Stream" folder. In there will be your M2TS file/s

Incidently you can download VS XP Pro from the US site at ¢G37.50, quite a bargain, see here:

The condensed version of the above is....
Select Blue Ray Folders instead of AVCHD.

I use vsx2pro(no trial version) and Sony SR11 , and there is no problem to create an AVCHD file (HD PAL 1920) with an M2TS extension which plays from my HDD. Of course you have to select the "create video file" instead of "create disc". which I suppose you do..

erdna,
Just to get this straight. Are you saying that you can go to "Share" "Create Disc" choose "AVCHD" and then uncheck "Create disc" and check "Create Folders"? If so I think you are the only one who has posted on this subject over many months who can do this. "Create Folders" is greyed out on all our copies of VS12. The rest of us have to go to "Share" "Create Disc" and then "Blu-Ray". The folders option on this are active.

No john, like I wrote "of course you have to select "create video file" instead of "create disc". I just select share>create video file>AVCHD>PAL HD-1929>enter> set the right options> save as m2ts

OK understand now. I was on the theme of producing the HD folder that you can then burn to a standard DVD so that it will play in a Blu-Ray player or a PS3 as the original poster wanted to do! If you just produce the M2TS file you still then have to go through the create folders route to produce the BDMV folder that you can burn to a DVD.

I think the original poster wanted to "save AVCHD files from my pc to a hard drive to view them via my PS3". So I understood that he wanted to connect an external HD (or use the internal PS3 HD), in order to view his AVCHD files through his PS3 player. He didn't mention about a creating a disc.
