Upgrade to Windows XP Home SP3, now VS10 crashes

Post by hanspeter »

Hi

I recently updated my Windows XP Home from SP2 to SP3. Everything works fine, except my Video Studio 10 Plus. Almost each time I start the program it loads and then closes again and gives an error message that "Video Studio had to shut down due to an unexpected error". Sometimes I am able to load my project file, but when I start to render the project then VS10 crashes.
I think that it has to do with the upgrade from SP2 to SP3, because before it did not happen.
Does anybody have similar experience, or some other kind of suggestions what to do?

Thanks for your response

Hi Hanspeter

First try renaming the folder 10.0 to 10.0a
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\10.0

Start VS, a new default folder 10.0 will be created. Your library will revert to its default contents.

Otherwise try a re-install of the VS 10 program.

Hi Trevor

thanks for help. I tried the first step with changing the name of the directory, but no success. Each time I open VS10 and the project and when I start to render the project to a video file VS10 crashes.
Interesting is now only the following: each time when I use the smart render feature then it works, but as soon as I do not tick the smart render box then VS10 crashes.
I normally always render without smart render to assure the audio synch throughout long projects. That worked so far well, but as said in my initial message after the SP2 to SP3 upgrade it stopped working.

Any new ideas or hints?

Season's greetings to all

Hi Hanspeter
It may be just coincidence with the SP3 update.
Have you also manually updated direct X, a link at the top of this forum, this does cure problems that the windows audo update doesn¡¦t.
Have you applied the patch from Corel?

OK
Some have had problems with project content, Highly compressed video files are difficult to edit.
A corrupt transition has caused problems in the past.

So what type of video are you using in the project, the properties would be useful.
What are you rendering to, DV, Pal-DVD, Mpeg ???????? again properties would be useful.

Does VS 10 crash at the same point during rendering? If yes then check the content at this point.

Try rendering to DV-Avi, this will create a file upto the crash point, you can then drop it into an empty overlay track to see the exact point of failure. Again view the timelines at this point.

Hi Trevor

yes, I have the latest version of Direct X on my computer. The program crashes sometimes right after the start up (so I cannot even open any project) or then it crashes immediately after I press "Save" when rendering the project. But in most cases when I am able to show the project in the timeline the rendering process starts when I use the smart rendering feature (but as said I do not like to use the smart render because the Audio goes out of sync on longer projects).

Here the video info:
- MPEG2 format (PAL, upper field first); as coming from my video camera
- I render the clips to the same MPEG2 format as the individual clips, in the "Create Video file" command, when saving then it crashes immediately

Greetings

yes, I have the latest version of Direct X on my computer.
Just checking the version number does not verify you have the latest release, as the version numbers don't always change with each revision. So, have you downloaded and applied the latest version?

And Trevor may be correct that it is just a coincidence. To further check that why don't you remove SP3 and see if that fixes VS or not. At least you can eliminate or confirm that as being the problem.

I'll confirm Jeff's suggestions of updating DirectX and removing the SP3 update. I currently have VS10+ installed on my XP Home machine, that is also updated to SP3. Although I don't use VS10+ much anymore, I don't seem to have a problem with it crashing all the time.

Hi both

I now made a full deinstallation of VS10 and re-installed it again. At least for now with the first video the full rendering process (no smart render) has started without any problems.

I will need to render two other long projects, I will let you know the result. If positive that could be an important message for other people as well who have upgraded from SP2 to SP3 and who may face similar problems.

Regards

Hi

That¡¦s good news.
If you were to call tech support the first advice would be to re-install.

Hi all again

well, things are not always going smooth...after the re-installation of VS10 and only the second time I open VS10 the program crashed again, it was not even fully opening so I could start to open my project.

However, I then updated again the Direct X (via the link in the first Sticky in this forum) and after that it worked and I was able to render a very big file without any crashes. I will need to do an other one today, but I am opimistic that it now works: so re-installation of the whole VS10 AND re-update of the DirectX (I did it before my update to SP3 already, but seems that it must be redone after SP3 update, strange enough, but sometimes software is working strange....). And by the way: use the Webupater link of the Microsoft DirectX update, because that one checks the versions on the computer and updates the necessary files only.

Will let you know if something "extraordinary" should happen after my next use of VS10.

Regards, and Season's greetings again

Hi there

bad news. I was too optimistic in my previous post. Tried to render an other project about 25 minutes long. Rendering started well, but after about it reached 79% the program crashed again.

If anybody has some new ideas what to do please advise.

Is this the same project that keeps crashing? If so, I might look at that as the problem. Try a new project, maybe with the VS sample clips, and see if that works.

Hi

When you said you did a full reinstallation, do you mean a Clean Install?
Or did you merely uninstall from the ¡¥Add & Remove Programs¡¦ and then re-install?

I assume you are selecting Same as first Clip for your render options.
Did you try rendering to DV, as mentioned earlier, this should create a file upto the point of crash.
You can then add to an empty overlay track and investigate the end of the clip to view the timeline content.

Does VS10 always show an error report/info window after crash.
Or does VS10 just disappear without warning?

And same comment as Jeff, try a project using the VS samples.

Hi both

thanks for your advices again.

I tried with several projects and in all cases it crashes, most of the time right in the beginning when the rendering process should start. The one exception was when it started well and it crashed after approx 79% rendering.

Regarding the re-installation: I made a full re-installation with both ways: using the Add/Remove and also manually deinstalling with guidance in Corel support pages (Answer ID 760916).

I did not (yet) make the conversion to AVI, mostly because the Video Studio crashes immediately when rendering starts.

Nothing helps, I give up hope already.
