16:9... problem with black bars on top and bottom

Post by ragemaker »

I did my first 16:9 project a couple of weeks ago, I used a canon GL1 camera in 16:9 (of course). When I edited the clips they fit into the videostudio X2 screen with the grey and light grey checkerboard on the top and bottom, which I assume is correct because if the checkerboard wouldn't be there it would be a 4:3 format. After finishing the project when I play it on my 42" Plasma a black bar on the top and bottom of the screen appears. The DVD doesn't take up the whole screen. Am I doing something wrong? Here are the settings I used.

Project properties
Mpeg Files : Video format Mpeg2
24 bits 720 X 480 29.97 fps
lower field first
DVD-NTSC 16:9
Video data rate (max 8000Kbps)
lpcm Audio, 48000 Hz Stereo
Perform non-square pixel rendering has a check in the box

When I go to Share, and create DVD
Project settings

Lower field first
Video data rate (max 8000 Kbps)
Audio data rate :224 Kbps
Mpeg audio layer2 48 kHz, stereo
Display aspect ratio 16:9
Field type loser field first (DV)
do not convert mpeg compliant files has a check in the box
2 pass conversion has a check in the box

My video clip properties taken with a Canon GL1 video camera
File format Avi-Open DML
Frame rate 29.97
Data rate 3512.11 Kbps

Video
Compression DVD Video Encoder type 1
attributes 24 bits 720X 480 16:9

Audio
DV audio- NTSC
attributes 3200 kHz, 12 bit stereo

thanks in advance

Forgot to add, in the last stage after selecting to create disk and it gives you a chance to preview the project it takes up the whole screen of the project viewer.

Since your source clips are 16:9, your project is 16:9, and your burn properties are 16:9, I would look at the settings of your DVD player or TV...

Well that worked, I have never used my Xbox to watch a movie before, but I put the DVD in it and the video filled the whole screen. I tried every setting on my dvd player and didn't fix it. Oh well, it works in the other device.

Thanks Black Lab
