MF 6 crashing during trimming of movie clips

Post by lathompson »

I have a new ASUS computer with quad processors, 8gigs of RAM and a large drive, running Windows Vista home premium, 64bit. Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GT 220. The computer is crashing when trimming clips in MF6plus. I set this unit up only 3 weeks ago. I was beginning to think that if I worked too quickly with mouse clicks, the program would freeze because of it. Yesterday, it crashed 6 times within 20 minutes & the last four times was during a conscious effort to work slowly with the mouse clicks. It didn't seem to matter. There are two ways it does this. First way is really strange as the cursor stops in it's tracks and turns into, what I can only describe as, a little fireworks display. Then I'm forced to do a cold reboot. The second way it crashes is more scary. While everything is working just fine, all of a sudden the screen goes black, the machine goes silent and unresponsive, but the logo on the front of the machine continues to glow telling me power is not cut to the machine. A cold reboot is necessary again. This happened even when I stopped all other programs, including AV and firewall protection.

I had been using the program on another machine running the same OS but with half the memory and a dual processor.... it worked fine and never crashed. I thought switching to the more powerful machine might be a better and faster experience, but now this. Any ideas? This machine is supposed to be dedicated to working with videos and music only.

Having more power, does not guarantee a program will make use of it. I'm not sure if DVDMF6 is written to utilize a quad-core as it should be. Depending on what you're working with, photos or video, and if the video is SD or HD, it should not be crashing.

Are you working with photos, video clips or both? Are the video clips SD or HD? If HD are they AVCHD, which happens to be the most difficult to work with. It can be very demanding even to quad-core systems.

Have you applied any/all applicable patches for DVDMF6? The patches can be found on Corel's website or Ulead's. DVD MF 6 Patches. How about making sure you have the most current DirectX installed on your new system? The most current is Aug 2009 and must be downloaded and installed manually. It is not part of the regular Windows Updates. You can download it from HERE.

Yeah... There's probably something about the format of your video files that Movie Factory "doesn't like".

It's very unlikely that this has anything to do with your new computer.

I have imported footage from a standard DVD, using MF6. about 25 minutes of video in one clip. They are mpg. files, the default import settings. No photos are involved. Couldn't tell you if DirectX is up to date and I decided to do an update today just to make sure. Problem is, I'm having a lot of problems getting DirectX installed, due to a bad internet connection on this machine this morning. I'm working on that right now. MF6 works properly and without delays or quirks right up to the point that the crash occurs. I have applied the only patch I have found called UVS11_DMF6_HotFix01_Install_Issue.exe.

I finally got my internet connection going. I downloaded and installed DirectX and it would appear that I have solved the problem for the most part. I tried for 10 minutes, to crash the program using the same activities on the same files as before. I did finally crash it, but it took a lot of abuse to make it happen. I consider this problem solved! Thank you all for your help.
