Hi again Black Lab
I think the 16.9 feature on my Camcorder may be disabled. When you go into the menu as described in the manual virtually all the settings are set in purple and you can't change em. It's strange as it's set on 16.9 but the Cam is obviously shooting in 4.3 else I wouldn't have this problem.
Bit spooky if you ask me so guess I will have to go back to Canon for advice.
Thanks
Antonio

Have you found the "Program Selector" on the camera.
See page 56 of the manual here:
http://software.canon-europe.com/files/ ... CUG_EN.pdf
Just switch to a different program say the "Auto" and then see if yu can choose 16:9 aspect ratio
Pages 56 to 58 are important pages. Well worth studying!

But can you now set your camcorder to record in 16:9 mode?tonyjer wrote:Many thanks to both of you. I was obviously a bit lazy there. In fact I had used the Programme selector but only to use the low light. I saw the reference to Auto but wrongly thought that this was the default position.
Many thanks again.

Yep seem to be able to record in 16.9 and many thanks to Jeff from the Quaker state.
Unfortunately I'm still having probs:
Hi
This is sort of a continuation of an existing topic but also has a new slant so to speak: Was given 3 workarounds to convert captured 4.3 avi to 16.9 for my project. Decided to use the detailed tutorial but am getting confused with the use of the overlay track as suggested. The tutorial refers to dragging the clip from the timeline to the overlay track etc etc but in doing so I seem to have lost the clip and can¡¦t seem to recover it (seems to have disappeared from the top right where all the captured files are).
Does this normally happen when you use the overlay? Have searched the PC but can¡¦t find it anywhere.
Just to recap what is missing is a 60min avi file.
Grateful for advice but frustrated.

No, the overlay tracks work the same as the main track.
As you know, the thumbnails in the library are virtual. The real clip should reside in the working folder that you established upon capture. If it is not there then you somehow deleted it.

Hi again
Thanks for this. Guess I must have deleted it. Thanksfully still have the tape so will recapture.
Just out of interest am curious about the use of overlay. In this context I have been advised to drag the clip into overlay track etc but I've noticed that you can insert clips into overlay track exclusively or drag them fromrm timeline.
Can someone explain the difference between the two?
What do I need to do in following Trevor's tutorial to convert 4.6 to 16.9.
Many thanks

Hi Antonio
The tutorial was written for earlier versions of VS, but is still relevant for the recent versions.
We can now distort the 4:3 frame from the top track, so there is no need to drag to the overlay track,
But can be used if required.
As it seems to be causing some confusion I will correct the instructions on the web page
.
OK
Change the project properties to use 16:9 aspect
With the 4:3 video in the top track select the Attributes tab. Select the ¡¥Distort¡¦ button.
The preview screen will show yellow trim handles in the corners.
Right click the preview screen and select ¡¥Fit to screen¡¦
I also right click and select ¡¥Keep aspect ratio¡¦
This process is zooming in to the video far enough to hide the black vertical bars.
The lost Avi file
Most likely you have only deleted the thumbnail from the library or timeline.
When you captured the video the file was saved to the Working Folder with the thumbnail loaded to the timeline and probably the library.
Have a look in the working folder.
Inserting Video.
You can import/insert video clips to the top timeline, overlay tracks and the library. These thumbnails are merely virtual clips, a representation of the captured file on the hard drive. Changing these does not alter the captured file.
