Running VS on UBUNTU or Windows 7 64 bit

Post by MIKEL »

G'day nice people,
Since I have had to work on UBUNTU this month to check a new website I was amazed how an old (very old) laptop has woken up at last and actually works. They told me it would happen and I told them I had a laptop that couldn't be woken up. I was definately wrong. Will there be a version I could run under UBUNTU-in my lifetime?

If not what about Windows 7 64 bit instead of Vists, anyone gone there yet? If I get positive replies I'll go and get myself a copy this week.

Have a good week.
Mike
Many thanks

NO.
Linux, BSD, Solaris and other such systems are "Open Source" and Free.
The software that you run on them is also free so I hardly think anyone running an open source operating system is going to actually PAY for something!

Maybe I didn't explain myself correctly.
People run programs on UBUNTU that they pay for and invariably the price is a lot more than the Windows version-it just runs faster on this thin OS. That unfortunately is the sum total of my knowledge on the matter.
When running in project mode my "fast" pc staggers along and on a slower machine it simply collapses. maybe UBUNTU isthe answer.

Sorry to rain on your parade, simply put - it is not going to happen.

I too have Ubuntu installed on one of my (slightly) older computers (and recently updated it to the latest Kosmic Koala version). I have wondered the same thing, and have even tried using Wine (the Ubuntu/Linus program for 'forcing' some Windows based programs to install under Ubuntu. There is a database which goes with wine which now contains many thousands of programs which will load into Ubuntu. But I am afraid that Video Studio is not one of them.

The versions of Ubuntu I have used have their own video editing program (though I am away from home and that computer and cannot recall its name). However, like Windows Movie Maker, it is pretty basic...

Thanks Ken that was quite a lot of interesting information.
I actually wrote to Corel and asked them if they had ever thought about it.
Have "fun" wherever you are.
Mike.
Many thanks

I run VSX2 Pro on Windows 7 64 bit as well as every program that I ran under Vista. Definitely a better and better performing OS than Vista although I actually never really had issues with Vista after SP1. As far as rain we here in Birmingham Alabama would be glad to send you some if the folks in Birmingham England do not have any to spare. We are 20 inches over for the year and expecting more this week. 2 years ago we were so dry they were ready to ration water. Go figure.

I would imagine that Windows 7 64 bit would help smooth out the jerky playback in project mode. I have become to feel good with VS yet the so called sensible people around me use either Pinnacle or Premier-both of which, on the surface, seem to look very similsr to VS. The one professional I know uses Final Cut on a Mac that could have cost more than my old car.

I will move over to Windows 7 64 bit as soon as possible and then add some more memory (I have 4GB). How much memory do you have now?

Have thee all a very interesting week.
Many thanks

The space station would be proud to have all that computing power.
How much did all that cost?
Very good choices here specially the MOBO that seems to be the overclockers dream.
Do you do this for a living?

I am truly amazed and excited to know the breed hasn't died out.

I hope you drive a Porche as well.
Many thanks

IT is my living/work - not video editing.

Would like to spend more time learning and doing but....

Obviously the results of vastly different marketing plans.
