Ken
When you use the crop on the first keyframe you need to right click the keyframe and choose "Copy and paste to all" Then all the clip will be the size you want. I chose 32% for the width in my sample to give me a border!
Sorry Ron beat me by a minute

Hi Ken

You say you are using Images, if so it may be easier to use a photo editor to make the images the correct size.
Then import them to VS.
Are you using widescreen 16:9 or 4:3??????????

I think Ken is using video clips as Steve did in his sample! In any case it works exactly the same for video clips as still images!

Thanks for the "stationary" advice. Now, when I have cropped the 3 overlaid images and dragged them in place- in project mode the 3rd one shows with colour on its left and when I look for the other two after selecting each one I get the box with the sizing handles but with nothing in them when I move the whole boxSo what am I doing wrong now

I have used a height of 100 and a width of 33( thinking one third) for each one when customising the filter. When on the screen they are not all the same width and are moving along instead of staying where they were dragged to.Advice please ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Ken
You need to copy/paste the first key frame to the last key frame.

Clue: It's that red Diamond shape.

split screen

Did not see your replies until after posting-using 4:3 and images I have used in my current project.I am just experimenting in an untitled project
now in order to try and get things right first
Can I assume that 33% width will give a third of the screen(or 32 with a border as John suggested) ?

Probably, I tend to use trial and error, if it looks right it is right!
Don't go by the sample video I linked to - that was just thrown together quickly to test that it worked. If I was doing a serious video I would have spent a bit more time on it!

When you have cropped to the size you want, have copied and pasted the first keyframe to the last one and clicked OK you need to use the Chroma key to make the background of the clip transparent. Make sure you set the "Similarity to "Zero". That will get rid of the coloured sections to the left and right of the cropped clip. Use this Chroma Key effect to all three clips. At the moment it sounds as if the clip on top is hiding the clips beneath it that's why you can only see a blank space between the rectangle with the yellow handles. Using the Chroma key on all three clips will show them all.
Tip:
To place the clips accurately especially if you want an even border, highlight the clip and use the arrow keys on your keyboard to nudge.

3rd clip bigger

Post by Ken Veal »

Next problem....
This is my workflow Insert colour clip into timeline---drag image 1 to o/lay track 1---right click on overlay 1 in window, right click select fit to screen.---drag crop filter to o/lay 1---customise filter-height 100 width 33 select fill colour the same as colour clip---move box in original to show part of image required in right side window---right click 1st (red ) keyframe --copy rght click last key frame paste ---select mask+ Chroma key--- tick apply o/lay options reduce similarity of the same colour as the colour clip to zero----tick stationary --ok drag o/lay to left of screen.Repeat with 2nd image dragging to the middle and 3rd dragged to the right.

Now I have 3 images in the project but the 3rd one on the right is not the same area as shown in the preview filter window and is also bigger than the other 2 images. When I move the 3rd clip it
overlaps the middle one.
More help please .....................Ken

Are you sureyou copied and pasted the first key frame to the lkast in each case? Try it again and this time use 32% width. Then see if you can get even borders!

split screen in 3

Post by Ken Veal »

I am using an imported clip that is a pic I took with my still cam.I double
checked the settings again, the 3rd clip was not set to the fill colour of the colour clip so I changed that. What I see now on playing the project is the 3rd clip is opening out to cover up most of the middle clip and more of the image that displaid in the preview window of the filter showing after the height and width had been adjusted.I will try the border thing when I get this present issue sorted. Why is this happening to me ,its Christmas

Not at my own computer right now to check this but instead of using chroma key, try using "full frame mask".

Image
In the drop down box select mask frame - then look for the one which is a big rectangle - probably the very last one.

So you are using images not clips?

Sorry but I don't know what you mean by "set to the fill colour of the colour clip". Just set the colour to black every time. Then make sure you set the Similarity to "0". This works every time for me and I have mixed and matched images and clips of different sizes in the same project without probs.
What I see now on playing the project is the 3rd clip is opening out to cover up most of the middle clip and more of the image that displaid in the preview window of the filter showing after the height and width had been adjusted.I will try the border thing when I get this present issue sorted. Why is this happening to me ,its Christmas
