Split Screen

Post by secookie »

Hi

I'm currently preparing our annual dvd for our cub pack and want to do a dallas style intro with three photos on screen at one time. Other than manually using three lines, one for each photo and playing about with the split - I can see no other way of doing it. Does anyone have any clever suggestions that may help?

Many thanks for your help.

Hi

I think that is they way.

Using the overlay tracks you can copy Attributes and Paste to another image.
Create the right image then paste its attributes to the left one.
then reposition the image to the left. It will be the same size and shape.
Then complete the middle image.
Unfortunately reshaping the image in VS actually distorts the image.

You could of course use an image editor to create your images to the correct shape, saving them as Png with transparent background should work.

Hi Trevor

Many thanks for the thoughts - as you say, the only trouble with this route is the distortion, its such a pity.

I did get an email about newbluefx videoessentials 3, but it appears the splitscreen part is not compatible with videostudio (or so their website says here http://www.newbluefx.com/so/ve3gift/billboard.html).

Its so frustrating as I know what I want to create but don't seem to be able to do so very easily.

Thanks for thoughts again.

Use Movie Wizzard. Insert your photo content and there is a template that automatically adds everything you want to the intro. There are templates for two and for three mini windows showing photos in the slide show... Al

Hi Al

Thanks for the info, not used the Movie Wizard, always used the full editor.
There are some good introductions for slide shows, even if you don¡¦t use they provide good ideas.

Thanks again

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately the movie wizard doesn't really give me the look I'm after. what I want is the classic "dallas" look from their intro - it does look like it might be difficult to achieve with my knowledge which is a great pity.

Once again, thanks for thoughts guys.

Are you looking to make this split screen with three video clips or three images? It's a long time since I saw Dallas but I thought they were video clips. I can remeber seeing Victoria Principal but wether she was moving or not I can't recall, wished I could, that's old age for you

As much as I'd like to use three videos, I think I'd be there for ever trying to get video clips - no it would be 3 still images per screen - it seemed an ideal way to introduce the kids at the start of the dvd without taking up too much time.

Here's a still image of what I'm trying to achieve, other than rather than one person I'd put three on http://i.ytimg.com/vi/ixgWR6EFvaY/0.jpg

I can do the text and everything else, just getting the three images in that manner is proving very difficult.

Thanks again for everyone's help

Hi

As i said earlier---You could of course use an image editor to create your images to the correct shape, saving them as Png with transparent background should work.

Other than that you are left with manipulating the images in 3 overlays.
Doesn't take long to do.

Because of the sloping image, i found it displayed a jagged edge, whether this shows after rendering i don't know.

its a long time since i saw Dallas, not that i was a fan, but searching You-Tube shows some intros.

Trevor Found the intros. Victoria Principal was definitely moving. Am off to lay down in a darkened room for an hour now :D

Below is the credits clip that I made. I used 3 overlay tracks to make the split screen. If I remember correctly, some (if not all) of the clips are cropped to keep their aspect ratio while fitting into their section of the screen. IMHO that is the secret to a good split screen. If you try to fit all of the clips in their native size you are going to have problems with distortion.

Just use 3 overlay tracks and the crop filter. |It's quite easy.

Its quite easy if you know how. I have trie an tried and whilst i can get the first o/l track to work perfectly, the second and third tracks only show a black screen. The only way I can get track 2 to show is to delete track one and three. I can't get all three to show together

As per my screen shot you just dump them onto the 3 overlay tracks as shown.

Tackle each track one at a time.
Do overlay track 1 first, place it on the track, make it full screen.
Add the crop filter. Make the cropping 100% tall and as wide as you want.
Drag this first clip over to the left of the screen.

Now repeat these steps with overlay track 2 but this time drag the (remains) of the cropped clip to the centre of the screen.

Repeat on overlay track 3 and drag the (remains) of the cropped clip to the right of the screen.

Nothing magical or mysterious.
