Strange .mod file behaviour

Post by erdna »

A friend asked me to create a DVD out of some files on his JVC Evirio. I am not familiar with .mod files, but as usual I intended to start by copying the .mod files (1.82 Gb) onto my HDD through a USB connection. Tthe Evirio HDD was detected in my PC but when trying to copy/paste some files, I got the prompt " not enough menory to perform this action" where I have at least 100 times more HDD space than needed. X2 has no problems to insert the .mod files straight from the camcorder HDD to the timeline, but I could not keep the camcorder for editing from there, so this was not a solution. The only way to finally get the wanted content on my PC HDD was to batch convert in X2 and save the converted(.mpg) files on my HDD. I never used .mod files before, but is this normal that I cannot just copy/paste these files to my HDD?

There is no reason why you should not be able to transfer the files across with a USB cable. Forget the fact that the JVC Eviro is a camcorder, treat it as you would an external USB hard drive. You should be able to move the files across to your internal hard drive. If you cannot then try either a different USB cable or a different USB port.

Thanks for yr reply, but still strange..The usb connection is OK because , like I wrote, I could open the .mod files from the camcorder HDD in the X2 timeline ( while the camcorder was connected through USB). I could also see the camcorder's HDD on my PC. I only could not use copy/paste the .mod files I wanted from the camcorder HDD to my PC HDD("not enough memory..."prompt).ike I am used to do with .mts files. Batch convert the .mod files to .mpg (lost the widescreen flag) or using a small program SDcopy.exe (kept the WS flag) was the only way for me to get the files onto my HDD. There is some information on this issue in the MS knowledge base. Could be related to the number of attributes related to a file when using Vista SP1.

But did you try to just drag and drop the files to your HD?

Yes I did try "drag and drop"...same prompts. I wil try to get this camcorder back for further checks, like connect to my XP and my Vista SP2.

are you sure you set the aspect ratio correctly.

Start a new project
Change the project properties to the ones to be used for new Mpegs
Tools Batch Convert
Save Type As--Mpeg
Check properties
Add Video Files

Thanks again Trevor. Indeed you are right. I did not set the correct properties. Now it's OK (16:9 flag) with the X2 Batch convertor.

Got that cancorder back (JVCGZ MG 135) Checked again, first on my Laptop (Vista SP2) and on my XP SP3 PC: everything goes like it should...copy/paste...
On my Quad Vista SP1 still strange things... it starts OK (this time) to copy/paste mod/moi files on my desktop. When i try to tranfer the folder, again "there is not enough memory..." When I try to delete the folder "you need permission...). After restarting my PC, the downloaded folders can be transfered to another disk, deleted etc.
So, there is something happening with my Quad PC, may be one day I wil find out what is going wrong...

The fact that it is saying you need permission...are you logged in as an administator. How about the other PCs?

Yes Jeff I am logged in as an administrator on all of them. Today I went on with my "investigation", and I think I found oud out what was going on. It must have been a USB disconnection coincidence. I now found out that the device (camcorder) could "not be safely removed", so I disregarded the prompt and disconnted while the camcorder was still switched on, and then all the strange things happened with the video files. I think the map and files got an attribute which makes them closed to whatever you want to do in Windows Explorer. By first turning off the camcorder and then disconnect the usb cable -which I probably did on my other computers, because there the camcorder runned on battery power which I wanted to save - everything was normal.
Thanks all for yr interest and advise
