Unable to capture clips from Canon HG10 to VideoStudio

Post by dentman8 »

Hi
I am new to video editing. Purchased VideoStudio ProX2 and second hand Canon HG10 . The Canon HG10 arrived minus the bundled software so I don't seem to be able to capture clips from the camera. I can only transfer files directly from the camera HD to a folder on the pc. These files are *.MTS. Do I require a driver to enable the camera to function with VideoStudio capture tab? Can I convert these files to M2T?
Grateful for any help!

Regards
Graham

You can import the MTS files into Video Studio without any conversion. Go to File > Insert media to Timeline or Library > Insert Media. Scroll to the folder with your MTS files and select one or all.

Just be aware that your camcorder is an AVCHD one, which is one of the most difficult formats on the consumer market today, though excellent high quality high definition (mpeg-4). The .mts format is the original format as used by the camera but can be seen and edited by your computer and X2. Your computer, fortunately, is powerful enough to be able to edit the format. If you select AVCHD as the output, it will be output in processed .m2ts format, which is still AVCHD high definition mpeg-4 though just wearing a different badge.

FYI, .m2t is high definition HDV mpeg-2 as filmed by quite a few HDV cameras of different brands, including Canon. (I have the HV20). It films to the 'old' mini DV tape, but its quality is at least equally as good as AVCHD, and it is far easier and less demanding of computer resources than AVCHD.
