What would you recommend to make an audio recording

Post by Joveworth »

I am making a camcorder movie, now the camcorder has no external mic hole and i dont want to rely on the camcorders mic system for obvious reasons.(to much surrounding sound and wind noise)
so my question is:

If im going to use an external digital voice recorder with a shotgun mic (synchronising the sound to the appropriate film) which one that isnt to pricey would be best ?

I think he means hardware rather than software.

I can't afford one yet, not that they are particularly expensive it's just that it's not high on my priorities ATM.

What I have my eye on is a Rode Mic

http://www.rodemic.com/region.php as a guide...but you can get cheaper ones...like the Rode VideoMic

Of course these need to be plugged into a camcorder which you say your camera isn't equpped with. The only thing I know about this area is to stay away from the MP3 voice recorders...check for better output formats

I'm assuming you mean hardware?

Edirol do some very good ones which are decent value.
You may find them too expensive though.

There is a half decent one in the £150 price bracket, but I can't for the life of me recall it's name at present.

Audacity will 'record digitally to a PC.' It involves dragging a laptop around rather than a much smaller specialised device but it's an option. Depends on the logistics of the setting/situation as to how (in)convenient that it.

It sounds like you want to record your sound and shoot the video at the same time. If this is the case you will have the same "wind noise" problem to contend with. The only way to overcome this completely (IMHO) is with a very good quality mic with a professonal dead cat fitted. I dont think 50 to 70 pounds will cover anything like what you need. Wind noise is one of the most difficult problems to overcome.
