partial timeline rendering
I have a long (almost 2h) project in VS12. I downloaded the files straight onto the timeline. I there a way to use a part (say 10 min) on that timeline to create a file from, by e.g. selecting that part and leaving the rest of the timeline content like it is? Thx for any advise.

Hi Erdna
There are a few options.
If you just want a smaller project, use the scissors to cut the clip into sections.
Drag all but one to the library to create a copy. Delete these from the timeline leaving one to edit.
After editing either add the next clip to the timeline and continue editing, or render the first project to a new video file.
Start a new project to edit the other sections, insert the clips from the library.

On file saved in Library
Thanks for this. Pls how can I copy out this file saved in the Library for other independent use?trevor andrew wrote:Hi Erdna

If I save an image in the Library, I can easily retieve it from the Hard Disk for other uses: but I have tried to look out for many files saved in the Library, to no avail.
I use VS8.
Thanks.

You can also use the Preview Range.
While in Project Mode move the cursor to where you want your new section to begin and click on the Mark In button. Now move to where you want it to end and click on the Mark Out button. Now you will have the dreaded red line above the timeline. That is called the Preview Range.
Then go to Share>Create Video File. When the Create Video File box opens, click on the Options button, and choose Preview Range.
This will create a new video file of that segment only.

Hi Banji Abereoje
I¡¦ll try to explain........
When using Video Studio we insert a video clip to the timeline.
What we see is a virtual clip, a thumbnail, a representation of the actual file on the hard drive.
If we right click and select properties, the file name indicates where the video is located on the hard drive.
Editing the clip, removing frames, cutting the clip into segments does not change the original file.
We are only working on a virtual clip.
We create a new video file by using Share Create Video File, this will create a file of the full project.
If we wish to create a file of a single clip we can.
Select a video clip in either the timeline or the library, Go to the menu-Clip-Save Trimmed Video.
This will render the clip to a separate video file and save it in the working folder.
A thumbnail of the clip will be placed in the library.
Is that what you need?

For the sake of completeness, a variant of the above is to have a clip in the timeline, and you make a cut in it (using the scissors icon). Then you select (by clicking on it) the portion you want to save as a new -- and real (not virtual) -- clip. Then with that portion highlighted on the timeline, go to Clip > Save Trimmed Video. The highlighting is important. Otherwise 'Save Trimmed Video' will remain grayed out...If we wish to create a file of a single clip we can.
Select a video clip in either the timeline or the library, Go to the menu-Clip-Save Trimmed Video.

Thanks all. The above approach seems the simpliest for me.Black Lab wrote:You can also use the Preview Range.

Hi
Take care if you wish to keep your video properties.
Be aware that using the Preview Range option will create a file of the project, including any other timeline content.
As Black Lab said-----Now you will have the dreaded red line above the timeline
The render properties are selected by yourself, the Same as First Clip may not be available.
Using Clip-Save Trimmed Video will use the files properties as original.

Another option is to peview the clip while it's in it's entirity in the Library...
Select the in and out point from the preview. Once that is done drag the clip from the library into the timeline.
Only the selected preview is now shown in the timeline...no red lines to contend with.
You can now create a new video file, or leave as is, cut ut up, add overlays...whatever.
Edit: I think I misunderstood the question hehe

Yes erdna, the Preview Range will make a file of the entire project's timeline. But I thought that's what you wanted.
If you just want a portion of a video clip I would go the Save Trimmed Video route.I there a way to use a part (say 10 min) on that timeline to create a file from, by e.g. selecting that part and leaving the rest of the timeline content like it is?
