Hi all.
I'm a video amateur but seasoned computer user, builder.
I have Ulead VS 11, and a Vivitar 840Xhd.

Looking to perform simplest of AVI to DVD transfers for now, but want to work up to more ambitious projects.

I have built a number of slide shows using VS.

I suspect my CPU is underpowered (Pentium IV HT, 3.0 GHz) for rendering the HD files, but really just trying to capture the moment for relatives, so real HD not required on output.

Somewhat limitted time, with 2 kids under , but real willing to learn!

Originally from Canada, but have been in RI for 7 years, so I'm begining to think that was a different life

I look foreward to meeting you all!

Darrell

I, too, have a P4 computer, and have recently entered the HD arena with a Canon XH-A1s (HDV format). FWIW, I have not had any problems working with it.

I cannot find any specs on your cam but I suspect it records HD in the AVCHD format. If that is the case you will surely have issues with your computer.

Hi Blacklab

I have a real basic question.... The files from the camcorder are AVI, but I've been reading that this is just the wrapper format.

How do I determine the video format of the files so that I can at least ask intelligent questions ;-) ... I've pretty much exhausted
the internet looking for the recording format.

Specifically, I'm trying to find out if the camera records in AVCHD

Thanks

Welcome to the forums,

It uses the H.264 format, most of the time it is located in the MP4 containter. You can read more about it HERE. You can download the manual for your camcorder from Vivitar's website.
