I simply copy these original AVCHD files using Windows (XP) Explorer from my memory card to my hard drive for video editing. No conversion is involved in this step. My Panasonic records/saves the digital video directly to my memory card. I'd like to trim a MTS file then convert/save the trimmed video as a mpg file.
Hi Larrewl
Do yo use the software supplied for your camera to download the files from the camera to the PC? It is HD Writer 2.5E I believe which accommodates the downloading from the camera to PC. If you do then it should produce a M2TS file not MTS.

Earlier I rebooted my Video Editing machine and now I can't save the trimmed video clips. Even my downloaded M2TS files don't work. The option is grayed out like everyone else. Very odd. Even for Alice. Shall return to the drawing board and come back later.

And I repeat what I have said before: "Save Trimmed Video" is grayed out with either .m2ts or .mts files work -- at least on my computer -- when cut (with scissors!)...

Hi All;

Many thanks for all the feedback on my initial question.

I¡¦m capturing the MTS files via VS X2 from a Panasonic HDC-HS9 camcorder. However, just as John experienced, if I use the HD-Writer software that shipped with the camcorder; the videos are downloaded in the (cumbersome) M2TS file format. I¡¦m keen to use MTS files if I can, as the directory structure created by HD-Writer (where the M2TS files are several levels deep) seems overly complex.

Also in response to John¡¦s question concerning the use of the scissors, these are also greyed out after trimming the video using the trim handles. They are not grey when I drag the trim handles, but are greyed out as soon as I release the mouse button.

As Ken mentioned, I¡¦ve also posted the question to Corel, so I¡¦ll respond to this thread if I receive any positive feedback.

Thanks again to everyone already involved in the thread.

I have been looking closely at the differnce between MTS and M2TS and I have concluded (I think) that MTS fies are the format that the camera manufacturers use to record to the hard disc or other media. Each manufacturer "seems" to have a slightly different variant of the MTS format whereas the M2TS format is the same wherever it comes from. The various downloading sofwares seem to convert the MTS in the camera to the universal M2TS so that should be the preferred format for editing. I'm not sure if I have this right and would be very interested to hear what other views there are on the subject.
I too have taken this "Trimmed clip" problem to Corel and have attached a PDF file tha you may find interesting. It is a copy of my emails back and forth with Corel. There is, hopefuly, more to come. I thought it was too long to put on the Forum.

One last point. I think I have found the bug. An M2TS file that has the mpeg-2 codec is OK for Saving the trimmed video but if it is H.264 the section is grayed out. Does that make sense. That's why some of my M2TS files workand some don't. Those that come from the camera areH264. Those that are saved as a BlyRay folder can be trimmed and saved! They have the mpeg-2 format. Does all that make sense?
With that Good night!

Further to my post of 27-11-09 here's the laest fromCorel:
Hi Joselito
Really don't see why I should spend money on this. I have explained the problem in detail. My last experience with tech support was very poor. This is clearly a bug as at least ten other users of VS x2 Pro have the same problem. The real problem is the H.264 format. M2TS files with the H.264 format are the ones that cause the problem. Other frmats work OK. That's exacly what i would tell tech support. Perhaps yu will pass that on.
Incidently the link on your email;
"To access your question from our support site, click here."
Still does not work. It takes you to a "Null" page.
Regards
John Mitchell

No not necessarily a bug. It is a limitation. They are totally different. A bug is when it is suppose to work, where on the other hand a limitation is that it is not suppose to work. They limited the program's ability to do that..;)
