Relinking problem

Post by ianrose »

VideoStudio ProX2 Ultimate:
When loading the Project the program returns "tracks 3 , 4 & 5 need relinking".
On clicking "Relink" and selecting those audio clips on the hard disk the system returns the message "the duration of the selected file should be longer than 00:58:16 for track 2 and for track 3 00:03:59:16 and 00:03:19:09 for track 4." The actual lengths of those clips are 16, 4 & 5 seconds respctively. I would also add that those clips appear on the time line and play correctly when playing the DVD. Because of this I tried running the "Share" option but again the same message was returned.
I also deleted those clips, re-recorded them and re-introduced them to the timeline but the problem remains.
I accept I may be being dim but any suggestions as to what I do next as I'm now running behind schedule on this DVD would be appreciated?
Many thanks.

Hi Ian

And welcome to the forum

Seems a strange problem, don¡¦t think it has been mentioned before.

Have you manually installed the Direct X update.
There is a link at the top of this forum.
Even though you may have Windows Updates this install does seem to fix some strange things associated with VS.

Re-Linking should only appear if you have moved, re-named or edited the files outside VS.
So I assume you haven¡¦t edited the files using an Audio Editor whilst using the files in VS.

Try Direct X first

Also there is a patch from Corel for X2, have you installed this?

Sorry for the delay replying.
We have checked and DirectX 9 is installed and working OK.
We loaded the patches and we are still getting the same problem.

Further suggestions greatfully received.

It's not a question that "DirectX 9 is installed and working OK"; it is a question of whether you manually downloaded and installed the latest update to it. Just about everyone (apart from those using Windows 7) will have DirectX 9.0c installed. But that version has regular updates issued for it. The problem is that those updates are not part of the automatic Windows updates. They have to be manually downloaded and installed. The version will remain 9.0c -- it's just that the individual version number will have changed...

What happens if you remove the clips that are getting the re-linking message from the project, save the project, then insert the new clips?

Thanks Jeff,
I have deleted the audio clips from the time line. Also deleted them totally from the hard disk and VS audio library. I then re-recorded the clips in the studio and re-introduced them to the project. Still the samr error messages.

Interestingly, even when I deleted all references to those clips and before re-introducing them I saved the project with a different file name and on opening the project would you believe it the self same error messages appeared?

How it even "knew" that these clips were requird I have no idea as all references to them had been removed, as I mentioned.
Any other offers would be welcomed.

the duration of the selected file should be longer than 00:58:16 for track 2 and for track 3 00:03:59:16 and 00:03:19:09 for track 4." The actual lengths of those clips are 16, 4 & 5 seconds respectively
Track 2: Actual = 16 Seconds. Expected = 58 Seconds and 16 frames.
Track 3: Actual = 4 Seconds. Expected = 3 Minutes 59 Seconds and 16 frames
Track 4: Actual = 5 Seconds. Expected = 3 Minutes 19 seconds and 9 frames.

Questions:
What is the duration of your entire project.
What are these clips, such as MPEG2, DV, DivX, MPEG4 etc.
Where did they originate from - e.g. camcorder, internet, off a DVD etc.
How did you get these clips into your computer - e.g. download from internet, off a DVD, transferred by firewire from a camcorder etc.

Hi Ian

Have you ever added any clips to the timeline and been able to edit them, without the Re-Link being active.

Start a new project, using the VS sample clips from the library, add to the timeline.
save the project.
Re-Open the project, do you get the re-link option?

Yes--The Project is saved as a VSP file, this is a small file containing the details of your projects content, It contains details of the clips added to the timeline, there size/length and location on the hard drive.
If you move/delete or Re-name these clips then VS will request a Re-Link. If you have re-made new clips then you will have to delete the originals from the timeline, then import the new ones, Re-Linking is looking for the original files. Saying that if the new files are longer than the originals then re-link would be successful, but some clipping will occur to the ends.

How it even "knew" that these clips were requird I have no idea as all references to them had been removed, No--the reference is contained in the VSP
Any other offers would be welcomed.
Ian, can you email the offending VSP file, i wont be able to open the clips but view the types and locations.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have resolved the problem. Apparently (and I have no idea how) some audio clips had been placed on the time line at a position some 40 minutes plus after the end of the project. I had not noticed this as the DVD stopped at the correct end of the project.
On deleting these unwanted clips the project loaded correctly with no instructions to relink.
Once again, thank you all for your suggestions.
