I have 2 issues...
1) I see references in the sticky post that creating a video file should take 1/2 hour. I am trying to do that and it is taking over 1 hour.
2) It renders to 95% then freezes. I have to kill the process.
Anyone else having these problems?

My apologies, however, although I did not eloquently state it, my question has less to do with performance based on my configuration than it does the behavior of the application. When I save a video file, the video runs silently in the preview window in real time as it creates, so if I have a video of 1 hr 20 minutes long, it runs 1 hr 20 minutes. Is this the way it is supposed to happen?
I guess my point is that if I edit in the timeline, then share and create disc without emptying the timeline my project completes in about 3 hours 20 minutes. If I create a video file as above, it takes about 1 hr 20 minutes to just do that, then I still have to create the disc. I figure I am doing something wrong.
My config is WindowsXP running on a new Dell Inspiron laptop with 1gb memory.

Bri,
Rendering speed is determined by many factors, a lot of which are determined by your computer.
However, if the Share/Create Video File activity is crashing VS9, something is wrong. If your properties are set correctly, then sometimes a corrupt video clip can stop the process. Try repeating with Smart Render turned off. I have had some success with this procedure.

Rendering a project will take 2 to 3 times the run time depending on the amount or info it has to trans-code and the capabilities of your system.
If you are rendering from mpeg to mpeg or avi to avi the time will reduce drastically
Rendering from different settings increases time.
Try to keep your project the same through-out (where you can)
At 2.5 times
In your case 1hr 20 min x 2.5 = 3hr 20 min if my maths are correct. This is normal
The basic steps are
1 Capture
2 Edit
3 Create video from ‘share’
4 Use the new file made in 3 to burn a dvd.
Have you read the top posting
Read the tutorials
Have a look at my Quick Guide from the link below.

I agree. A good computer can typically render in about 1-2 times real time, so a 1h20 minute file should take about 1:20 - 2:30 hours. The burn process time varies greatly depending on speed of the computer, RAM, burner speed, and speed of the hard drive. TYpically though, it's .5 to 2 times the run time of the file.
At least that's my experience.
As for the freezing, try updating your video card and your direct X. Also make sure you don't have any other programs open that might be stealing processor speed and/or virtual memory away from Video Studio.
