Video Studio Express
Video Studio Express
I have bought Video Studio Express and when importing from tape camcorder, I go to automatic "find scenes" and this works well, but, when I press "import" the tape is not rewound and so it imports the wrong parts of the tape.
Has anyone experienced this? or got an answer?

Welcome to the forums,
I've only ran the trial version of VS Express, and to say the least was very disappointed in it, so would not consider purchasing it. I can't recall if there are thumbnails with the ability to check which ones you want to import. If so did you check the ones you wanted to import? If not and then you click import, I think it starts from the point where you stopped.
If that's not the case, then I can only add, it is probably one of may faults in the program...

In the Capture/Import module, when it has scanned your tape, you should have several thumbnails. Hover your mouse over each thumbnail, and you should see in the top-right corner of the thumbnail, a check-mark. Clicking on the thumbnail activates the check-mark, marking this segment to import. Once you have all your segments selected, then press the Import button. VS Express should then rewind your camcorder to the correct position for each segment and import only those selected segments.

Tips:
- If you're importing from a DV source (digital-8, mini-DV) and you want to maintain the best possible quality, you should first open the ridiculous slide-out menu located along the right edge. Change the file format from MPEG to DV.
- You can also change the mode from Automatic to Manual for more control over the scan process.
- Change the Index Mode from Entire Tape to Current Position.
- Change the quality if so desired from the default of Best.

Hi Ron,
I clicked all the scenes that I wanted and yellow ticks appeared in the corner as you say , but when selecting import, the tape does not rewind to import the selected scenes.
Can you suggest why this is? I did notice that the tape did rewind when the "find scenes" was initiated but not when "import" initiated.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks for your help so far

My point is not with your specific problem, or when in the process it occurs -- but with the program you are using. This forum you are in is for the full Video Studio, not Video Studio Express. As far as I am aware, that is covered in the foum above this one in the list: Digital Studio 2010.
In any case, the import/capture stage is part of the overall editing process and depends on the program you are using to import/capture. In your case, that is Video Studio Express, not Video Studio...

If the topic is in the wrong section then I apologise but I would like to know how do I move it to the appropriate section?
I just want to resolve the problem I am having, not get into the correctness issue of where my question is. As it is the momentum for my real problem is lost anyway now.
Unfortunately I am not so kowledgeable with Corel products as some forum members
Perhaps someone else would like to try and help

Ken,
Thanks for moving this to the correct forum. I forgot to do so after posting my above reply...
Please provide more information, such as the make/model of your camcorder, the format you're importing (DV or MPEG). If DV have you selected DV Type-1 or DV Type-2 under the Video format options?
Is your tape camcorder digital or analog? There is a bug starting with the Vista patch for VS10 and continues to the current release, where transferring or capturing analog video, through some type of analog to digital conversion device fails. So far this does not appear to be your issue, but need to confirm your source.
How is your camcorder connected to your PC? For tape transfer Firewire is the best method.

There's something else wrong, as I have a version of VS 2010 on my desktop, that I'm able to still access. To provide the above instructions, I ran through a capture via firewire from my DV camcorder, an old Sony DCR-TRV 120. It worked as described.mossup wrote:Hi Ron,

Re: Video Studio Express
I always import my camcorder recordings using MediaStudio Pro, the first thing I always do is to hit "Rewind" on the control panel before I hit "Record".mossup wrote:I have bought Video Studio Express and when importing from tape camcorder, I go to automatic "find scenes" and this works well, but, when I press "import" the tape is not rewound and so it imports the wrong parts of the tape.

Re: Video Studio Express
He's using the auto scene detection, so once VS has detected the scenes, and he has made his selections of scenes to import, VS must rewind AND fast-forward the camcorder to the proper positions. That is not working for him..sjj1805 wrote:I always import my camcorder recordings using MediaStudio Pro, the first thing I always do is to hit "Rewind" on the control panel before I hit "Record".mossup wrote:I have bought Video Studio Express and when importing from tape camcorder, I go to automatic "find scenes" and this works well, but, when I press "import" the tape is not rewound and so it imports the wrong parts of the tape.

Have you tried the Manual scan? I'm not sure why VS is not controlling your camcorder properly after it has scanned the tape.
As a work-around, try using the free capture utility called WinDV. It works with Firewire only, and captures DV. Several of us use it over VS or MSP capture. It does not have an indexing function, however is capable of splitting by scene. It is a very, very simple capture utility. When you go to that page, there is an interactive screenshot explaining how to use it. Just mouse-over it, and tool-tips will pop up.
Do you still have the software that came with your camcorder? If so you can use it to transfer your video to your PC, and then insert them into VS 2010 Express.
How long ago did you purchase VS 2010? If it has been less than 30 days you could request a refund, and get the Full version of VS Pro X2 for less than what you paid for the Express..

That's a pitfall when buying from other than Corel..
The upgrade pricing is of course for anyone that owns a qualifying version of their software, no matter where you purchased it. However checking the qualifications listed on their website, they do not have any of the Digital Studio products listed. That does not mean that they will not. Maybe giving them a call, expressing dissatisfaction with yours and that you would like to upgrade it to VS Pro, they might. Worth a try..
