Difference between full price and SE variants of VS

Post by RichardT »

I have been using (quite satisfactorily) a full price version of VideoStudio 8.
I know this is quite old now but it does the job at the moment.
I have just had to buy a new Firewire card and it included a CD containing VideoStudio 11 SE DVD.
I am assuming that this is a cutdown version and I have been trying to find out what is missing from the SE version. Basically should I install the new version to get fixes and some new features or would I loose too much because it's a free version.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Best regards

The SE stands for Simple Edition - though the packaging will make it sound grand and glorious by calling it a special edition perhaps misleading purchasers into thinking there is something extra (special) about this one compared to the ordinary one!

There isn't an "off the shelf" SE edition - what these are will vary from one seller to another. As an example when I bought my laptop computer it came pre-installed with Corel DVD MovieFactory 5 for Toshiba. (this is a SE edition.) As you can see from my signature block below I already had various versions of MovieFactory anyway - including versions 6 & 7.

Upon looking at the software I was dismayed to discover that it (The SE Version) did not include the JPG image file format. Horrific when you consider that almost every digital camera sold today will record the pictures in JPG. The full version does of course include the JPG format.

Some VideoStudio SE editions are specially tweaked to enable that particular piece of software to be used for capturing video from the hardware device that the SE version was bought with. In these cases it is often found that the Full Version fails to work with that item of hardware.

Other than that video capture anomaly, it is best to treat a SE version as though it was a never ending free trial version intended to entice you into purchasing the full version.

Hi Richard

You can install VS 11 and still have VS 8 installed.

Personally I would stay well clear of SE versions, I would also stay clear of VS 11.
VS 11 full version has its own problems regarding firewire capture.

I use VS 10 at the moment, and unless I upgrade my cameras to HD do not intend to go further.

Give it a go, but if you should have problems then there is little the forum could advise, other than get rid of SE.

Update Patches/Fixes to VS 11 SE probably won¡¦t work, but you can try.

I would just spend the $50 or whatever it is and buy X2, because it is much better than v8.

Hi

Its about 57 GBP to buy in UK from Corel. Thats 95 USD and thats with 20 GBP Special Offer discount.

The Upgrade being more expensive by about a £1--seems strange???????

Available in Pro version at 57.57 (Pounds sterling) boxed edition. This contains CD so no probs re-installing in future plus a good printed manual. Well worth it, IMHO
It's here:

Be a bit wary of some of the sellers though.
I have never heard of
Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 Ultimate Education (VSPRX2ULIEPC)
which is up for sale at ¢G72.10

This is more than the cost of VideoStudio Ultimate from the
Corel UK site ¢G56.99

This is a version sold via Educational Partners of Corel. Dell is one of them. Sold as we know to educational and academic establishments usually on a multi user licence basis hence the high price. I doubt the Ebay seller is an educational partner of Corel but I suppose they might be. Anyway as a private individual one should never buy an educational copy. There are always college students trying to make a few pennies on the side with illegal copies of software!
