AVI file sizes and VS12

Post by brucefl »

Hello,

I figured that this was more a VS12 limitation than a problem with windows 7?

I dowloaded an avi file to try and edit in vs to see if would have any problems with that format. First I tried to importing it into the program itself, then I tried to place it in the library, the 1st errror I receive is C: (file name, then it says it is not accessible? Tried moving it and it didn't work.
THen I cancel it, and it says these files cannont be added to this project, maybe unknown file format, not enough memory, or the file is copyright protected.

The size of the file is 192 mbs, would this be too big?
I can't preview it in the preview screen, but can play the file and everything else?
thanks Bruce

Sorry but that doesn't help much.
There are a small handful of file extensions that describe that a computer file is a video. These include
avi, mpeg, mov, rm, wmv, qt, swf
Plus a few others.
Think of these as groups of a certain form of video, within those groups are lots of individuals. Liken this to animals, there are dogs, cats, snakes, birds, rodents and so on.
Within these groups are several types. For instance a dog can be a Poodle, Jack Russell, Alsatian, King Charles, Greyhound etc.

The term avi can mean any one of perhaps a hundred different types such as DV, MPEG4, uncompressed, MJPEG, DivX, Xvid, RLE, YUV, Cinepak and lots more.

You need to be more specific.

As Steve asks, what format???

Where did you download the video from, You Tube etc
Does the video play on other players on your pc, or is it just VS that complains............

More info please Bruce..........

File extensions

Video Clip (.avi)
This is all the properties tell me.
I downloaded it from this site,
http://www.narutocentral.com/?p=media/anime_episodes
It will play in any of the players alright,
but will not import into VS.
I was assuming .avi extention was the particular file extension as compared to the .mp4 I am having trouble with. .mpg plays fine in VS.
Trying to see what works with windows 7 and what don't, at least on my computer.

You can probably work out it by the file size.

1 hour uncompressed avi = 65 Gigabytes per hour
1 hour DV (Digital Video) = 13 Gibagytes per hour
1 hour MP4 / DivX / Xvid = 700 Megabtes per hour

not the burn but the import

Post by brucefl »

It is the imorting to the vs program, that is the problem?
It gives me the error or problems in the first post.

It won't allow me to import either into the townline or the library,
the .avi file is 176 mgs.?

I tried downloading one to see what codec was used for the "avi" files, however all I got was that they had been deleted due to a violation of terms. This generally means that they are being illegally shared.

I would suspect they are using DivX or Xvid codecs. VS is capable of allowing video files using those codecs.

Actually well over 800 different avi file types exist, but don't ask me to name them all :)
