Recording sound
Is there a way to record sound from a posted you tube video? I have Audacity and have found many instructions on how to do it, but I just can't get it done. Realtek is the sound card. I have tried kick youtube but it not seem to be what I wanted. I have tried capturing the screen with Cam Studio but it does not record sound. Thanks

With Audacity open in the box that may read "Line In" click the down arrow head and choose "Wave Out Mix" Start your You Tube and click the "Record" Button The round red one and that will start your recording. Hit the yellow square to stop. Click "File" "Save As" to save the Audacity project then click file "Export" to save to a WAV file.

Then delete the Audacity program and try downloading a new copy. I got my download from here:

Some soundcards/soundchips (and drivers) simply don't provide this option. If you don't see Wave Out, Stereo Mix or What-U-Hear as an input option, you need a work-around. You are more likely to be missing this option in Vista and Win7.
If you have Vista, your soundcard may support it, but it might be hidden/disabled. There is some information about how to enable it here and here. (This info might apply to Win 7 also.)
Another option is to use a loopback cable from line-out to line-in, and record line-in signal.
Or, Total Recorder ($18 USD) has it's own built-in driver for capturing audio. (I don't own Total Recorder, and I've never tried it.)

Have not used it yet but you could try Messer, it records audio that goes through your soundcard

Hi
I use Real Player, I know a lot on the forum don¡¦t like this program, but I have no problems, have always used it since time began.
Its free---The latest version (Real Player SP version 1.0.1) has a Download option.
Simply float your mouse over the video on you-tube to get a download.
Downlaods as a flash *.flv file.
You can use a real player converter to change to Mp3 only if you like, or simply play the video.
Not used it up till now, it worked a treat.

Rather than a whooooole monster app like realplayer to do a single simple task I tend to lean towards individual specialized tools.Darryl wrote:Download the whole video. Now why didn't I think of that? Perfect, thanks.
I download via http://youtubedownload.altervista.org and extract mp3 via http://geovid.com/Video_mp3_Extractor
One of the advantages of smaller free utilities is that they tend to upgrade detail stuff much faster than the Big App Box software.
For example I used to use keepvid.com to download, but then a couple of weeks ago it 'seemed' to stop working. Meaning it returned 'error try again' message for a few days running. I googled a bit and found other ppl having similar problems - they were half-guessing that youtube may have changed some protocol/format/whatever details. I saw mention of youtubedownloader and it worked on the first try on videos that keepvid failed.
This is not to denigrate keepvid at all (or RP either.) For all I know keepvid may have made adjustments by now, and/or they have other features, but I also tend to stick with what works till it breaks again.
Have a
Jim
