Attn Ken, creating AVCHD template...

Post by Dabitz »

Ken, I know you posted some time ago, when both you and I were young, how to create an AVCHD template by selecting the properties of an AVCHD file. I have searched the forum over and over but I can't find it. I think I was able to figure it out, but I don't remember how to apply the template to a new project. I was hoping you could refresh my mind.

Thanks so much as always.

I don't know specifically which one you are talking about as I have posted a couple of different template-related threads. Both in effect related to HDV original video, but only the second related to conversion of HDV to an AVCHD hybrid disc, so it is probably that one. In any case, it contained detailed instructions on setting up an appropriate AVCHD disc template...:

First, do not load any videos into the VS11+/X2 timeline.

Go to "Share -> Create Disk -> AVCHD".

Set up your "Preferences" for the AVCHD burning Module:
When you're in the AVCHD burning module click on the lower left hand corner Icon and select "Preferences". Assign an easily accessible "Working Folder" for the AVCHD burning module. Preferably a large NTFS drive. Make sure the "Do not convert & X-Disc" are ticked.

Exit "Preferences"

Click on the lower left hand corner Icon again and this time select "Disk Template Manager". Make sure "AVCHD" is selected in the top right hand drop-down box.

Click on "NEW", then make the following settings to create a permanent template that you can later apply as your "Project Settings" for the AVCHD Burning Module.

Make this template:
Template Alias Tab: Assign an appropriate name you will readily recognise.

General Tab:
FrameSize = 1440x1080 (remember, this was originally for HDV which uses this size frame. But you can also set 1920 x 1080)
FrameType = Upper Field First

Compression Tab:
Qualtiy = 100%
Video Data Rate 18,000kbs Constant Bit Rate OR Variable Bit Rate (Preferred 18MBS VBR or 15MBS CBR)
Audio Format can be either LPCM, Dolby 2/0 or Dolby 5.1 @384kbs or @448kbs (Preferred Dolby 5.1@448kbs)

Now go back to the "General Tab" and Double Check the Frame Size & Fielding information. For some reason when you make a change between tabs the program tries to revert back to "Lower Field First" or may even change the Frame Size.

Hit "OK" to save this template.
Hint: Hit the "EDIT" Icon & double check all your settings again, especially for the correct field order.

I suggest using 18MBS@VBR using Dolby 5.1@448kbs (Great quality yielding small file sizes; average Bit Rate will be approx 12MBS) .

Exit the template manager.

1) - Now while you are still in the AVCHD burning module 1st screen timeline click on the "GEAR"/cogwheel Icon (the middle one).

2) - Click on "Change Mpeg Settings" and select the previous "Template" from the dropdown list that you created using the above instructions. This will now assign your customized template as the AVCHD burning modules "Project Properties/Settings". These are the values the encoder will use to render/encode the AVC/H264 AVCHD compliant videos onto the AVCHD disk you will be burning.

3) - Insert your original [HDV]/[AVCHD] files while in the AVCHD burning module. Build your menu and burn an AVCHD disk.

If using HDV input files, they will be converted to AVCHD as part of the burning process. I find this gives me better quality control than first converting them to AVCHD in the Editing module.
