MOVING UPWARD...WHATS AFTER VS??

Post by lakewud »

Appologies for perhaps going off topics - seeing as this is all things VS...but i favour this particular forum over others and would appreciate a reply.

Shortly i plan to upgrade my computer...quad-core no less, windows 7, better ram and graphics card etc etc. I also plan to purchase Particle Illusion - which i enjoy playing with and seems to work well with my current VS10+ . Finally, i plan to buy a HD camcorder.

I enjoy making my little dvds with VS and to be honest virtually everything ive wanted to do..effects wise etc..with a little help from this forum / internet advice/downloads Ive managed it.

But i am now wanting to broaden my enthusiasm for video editing - and after a few trial runs of doing friends wedding videos ( the editing/natty dvd covers / menus etc ) Im keen to move into..dare i say..more professional territory...well ok...in so far as time constraints and budget allows...so..semi-pro then.

Finally, the question/s Id welcome a considered reply too by any with experience...

Aside from moving onto VS11..or is it VS12 now..or perhaps this new Coral movie making package...could some kind soul please inform me...What is considered a real upgrade from VS..regardless of 'starting again, and learning from scratch'...Im keen to move on...Im looking for the best possible quality a package can deliver.

Same applies to my upgrade..ok quad-core/windows 7 and HD camera aside...anyone tell me the way to go...the best graphics card perhaps?/ and best packages to use..particularly if i am wanting to take my hobby into more semi-pro areas...well, at least offer my services to friends/family to edit - better - their videos etc

Please advice, any advise welcome.

It's now Video Studio Pro X2.
...perhaps this new Coral movie making package
Corel Digital Studio 2010? I think that's an entry-level package.

I've never used a more professional video editor. (I do have a special-purpose MPEG editor.) Corel Media Studio Pro is apparently being phased-out (doesn't work with Vist or Win 7).

Sony Vegas and Adobe Premier seem to be popular. Wikipedia has a list of video editing software.

For more-professional DVD authoring, I use Corel/Ulead DVD Workshop, but it's no longer available (and doesn't work in Vista or Win7). I have tried-out the trial version of DVD-Lab ($100 - $250 USD) and I'm going to buy the $130 version which can make a DVD with 2 audio tracks. Sony & Adobe programs also have higher-end DVD authoring, but they are more expensive.

I'll just add that Corel's new Digital Studio package is not what you want. It is not worth the time to even look at it. Corel really messed up with that. It is a huge step backward, and very, very slow, clunky, and snoops around your PC for all your media.

That's like asking what is the best car, or best food. Everyone will have their own opinion. (And remember, you are asking this on a VideoStudio board, so which way do you think we lean? )

Sure, a Ferrari goes fast, but a Ford still gets you to the same place. A filet mignon fills your belly, but so does a hot dog. Ok, enough with the bad analogies.

As Rich2Putt says, an editing app doesn't necessarily make the video. It's more the person at the keyboard.

If you still long to "upgrade" I suggest to trial some of the more popular apps out and see if any float your boat.

If you're wanting a real professional package, be prepared to lay out professional capitol. The price tag is meant for those that are going to use their software for making some big bucks. However there are those that invest huge sums of money on their hobbies..;)

These also will have a rather steep learning curve, and are not without their faults. When Ulead MSP was in it's hay-day, there was a member that made their living in television. They had at their disposal one of the more expensive NLEs. He complained that it crashed more times in one day, than his MSP on his home machine would in a month...

Hi Gary
You can get Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 for about £520 but I have dabbled with previous versions and find you need a couple of sister programmes to go with it. That means getting the whole CS4 collection which will stand you in at £1,100. Its also a very steep learning curve although there are some very good free video tutorials on the web.
I find VS x2 Pro more than covers my needs but you have to choose. I think it more important to spend more on your new PC than on software. Also look at Intel® Core™ i7 Processor for performance.

I am a member of a video club (~100 people). I am the only ProX2 user but I feel happy with it. In general, the implicit ranking in this organisation is as follows:
1. Final Cut Pro on Mac
2. Edius
3. Premiere (mainly for DV users)

mitchell65 has a very good point. The best editing software in the world will totally drag on a ten year old computer. You should have a more modern system for best results, Core 2 Quad, i5 or i7 if you can afford it.

Hi
I am a member of a small camcorder/video club.

They have been using Premiere 6.5 for many years.

I gave them a demo of VS X2 Pro last night, using some of My HD footage, they were very impressed.

Nough said.

Regards.

So what are you doing with the "Old Computer"
Unless you have any other plans for it why not wipe it clean and re-install Windows - Here I would go for XP because it is the one where your existing software is most likely to work, and being less RAM / Processor hungry than Vista or Windows 7 is likely to run faster with XP.

Then simply dedicate that old computer to video editing. No internet, no anti virus - no games - no Microsoft Office etc. JUST Video Editing and perhaps Photography editing (Paint shop Pro / PhotoImpact etc.)

Use your new Windows 7 computer for everything else - internet - Office Suite etc.

What a good idea. I did that although I use the best machine for video and still editing and the "old" machine for everyhing else. Just my choice but I dont use word processors or databases much now I am retired.
Withpout internet , anti virus etc the new machine flies!
