VS9 Why can't I create a surround sound video?

I have a new sony DVD DCR403 video camera that records in 16:9 and 5.1 surround sound. My problem is when I go to create a video and use the "custom" wmv settings I see a bunch of 5.1 surround sound choices but if I pick any of them my custom template disappears when I try to choose it and save the file name. I have all of the choices such as neptune and microsoft media 8 and 9 choices but my custom choice is not an option any more. If I do not choose a 5.1 setting and just go with a normal stereo setting, my custom template shows up and I can create my video. Both my work PC which does not have a 5.1 sound card and my home PC which does have a 5.1 sound card will not work with the 5.1 surround sound custom settings. Anyone else having this trouble and know a fix?
