New Computor Time

Post by derek l »

I'm having a hard job deciding what PC i should upgrade to, I have a AMD athlon 2400+, 2 ghz, 1gb ram, Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 420 video card, 1 x 320 & 1 x 160 Hard Drives ( 160 is for video only ) Shes about 6 -7 yrs old but cant handle some of the new Ulead programmes 11.5 ,pro x 2. Nero 8, etc....
UVS 8 & 10 worked a treat and i enjoy the software, but like all good things, the time has come !
Since the knowledge of the members in this forum is immense i'd be really greatful solving this problem. I would be using the PC for Editing much more than Games.... Theres 6 options of PCs that appeal to me, i think they are all custom built , so any feedback would greatly be appreciated.

Notes:
1. Specifications have been taken beyond requested for purposes of economy and future-proofing ?the specs can be dumbed down but will not save huge amounts ?50 on the base build ?the performance is almost doubled
2. Componentry chosen to support Blu Ray ?motherboard and graphics
3. Graphics recommended is 1GB ?256MB no longer used in mainstream builds ?1GB is $15 more expensive than 512MB
4. 2x500GB HDD chosen as these drives offer 32MB cache versus 8 or 16MB of 320GB HDD
5. Recommended that consideration be given to running HDD as RAID 1 ?will appear as if there is only 1 x HDD but the second is a mirror of the first and hence if one should fail no data will be lost
6. For the nature of the work envisaged and taking into account that the system is fully 64bit architecture, a 64bit OS is recommended to extract full performance
7. A 64bit OS will work at almost 1.5x the speed when processing video
8. A rule of thumb for any OS ?the more RAM the better ?32bit limited to 4GB whilst 64bit can use up to the maximum that the motherboard can accommodate or 192GB in total

I think this is the wrong Forum for this question. It is not really VS related and this is the Video Studio Forum. It will probably get moved.
Almost impossible to answer this. If you got 6 replies or any number that was equally divisible by 6 then there would probably be the same number of votes for each one! I presume they all offer Windows 7.
To me it really is looking at each make and try to ascertain which is considered to have the best build quality and the best quality components. It is, IMHO, wrong to just compare stated specifications for a component. It is just as important to check the make and quality of the components.
I think it is a question of "You pays your money and takes your chance!"

Although I've always built my pc's for furture proofing, I've never done anything with them until they fail, and by then the future has moved on considerably, so I now don't build for that reason, I build for best bang for bucks at the moment I build and i7 is a fantastic build right now.
Just sorted one for my son and it fliiiiiiieeeeeeeeeessss.

Number one spec to select is fastest and largest main memory you can buy. All modern pc's have many applications running and keeping the largest % of them in main memory is key to fast... Al

Whilst having an adequate amount of RAM is important, I think it is more important to concentrate on the processor - multi core and the faster the better.

If I were to build a PC now I'd go for something like this:

i7
4 gig Ram DDR3 more than 800Mhz speed and fast settings
a MB with 6 USB and 2 Firewire ports and a BIOS that supports easy overclocking
Nvidia 9000+ minimum
Case..good airflow with 2x usb and 1 firewire, audio line-in, headphone and mic jacks at the front panel
Auzentech Soundcard
TV Tuner Card
Windows 7 premium 64bit

Got this 2 months back
CPU = AMD Phenom Be X4 3.2 Ghz ( overclocked to 3.57 Ghz )
MB - Gigabyte GAMA790XT4UDP
RAM - Corsair 2 x @GB,1600 Mhz ( running at 1632 Mhz )
Graphics : GTS 250 1 GB
Case : Coolar master Elite
OS " Windows 7 ultimate

Serves my needs well for now. Will upgrade to 16 GB

If you are gamer go for fast CPU,GPU and memory
If you are video editing the above should be good enough
By the time you settle with the new hardware you will outdated :D
