Windows 7 / Direct x?

Post by brucefl »

I was checking the site and noticed the announcement about dir. X

I am getting ready to re install VS pro x2, after doing a clean install on a new hd. Should their be any problems with the direct x.

I would assume that vs woudln't overwire, or that windows would allow and older vers. to be written over the newer one?

Just wanted to check before messing something up.
thanks Bruce

I posted a question a couple weeks ago about a problem I had with installing VS X2 Pro in a clean install of Win 7. During the installation, when VS flashes progress messages telling which installation step it is on, at one point it said it was installing directx. That concerned me because the version on the VS installation disk is old. Win 7 uses directx 11, which is the newest version.

I think I know what happened, but am not 100% sure because it was 2 weeks ago and I can't remember exactly the sequence of events. But in case my mistake might be useful to you, here is what I think happened.

I have "autorun" disabled, so when I put a disc in the drive, it does not automatically run when there is an "autorun.exe" file at the disc's root folder. I used Windows Explorer to browse the files on the VS disc. I doubled-clicked on "setup.exe" to start the installation. It went immediately into the installation (the first step was asking me the language I want to use). There was no installation menu. After telling choosing my language (English, which was the defualt), it started installing VS and then said it was installing directx. So running setup.exe not only installs VS but also installs directx without asking.

I think I should have doubled clicked on "autorun.exe" instead of "setup.exe". When you run "autorun.exe", it doesn't go directly into the VS installation; it brings up a menu. The first item on the menu is to install VS. The second item on the menu is "Install Utilities" and if you click on that, it gives you a choice of 4 utilities you can install, one of which is DirectX.

I think you will be OK if your CD/DVD drive is set up for autorun, or if you double click "autorun.exe" from Windows Explorer's list of files on the VS installation disc. Then avoid using the menu choice to install directx.

Just don't run "setup.exe" like I did. Hope that helps.
